I am a teacher in the Milwaukee public schools in WI and I am relocating to Atlanta next June. I would like to chat with a teacher that teaches in the Atlanta public schools.

Not a teacher -- but I just want to make sure you understand that in Metro Atlanta there are probably 18 school systems (if not more). City of Atlanta pays the most, but not by much in some circumstances.

there are 18 surrounding Atlanta. Is that what you are saying? I want to teach in the city, so Atlanta Public schools. Or do you mean Atlanta public schools has 18 school systems? I have already contacted the Atlanta Public schools and they didn't mention that.

No there are 18 school systems in the Metro area. If you only want to teach in the city of Atlanta, then yes, that is your only choice -- Atlanta Public Schools.

Is there a reason that you are limiting yourself to the city system?

Default teacher

I am interested in teaching in the inner city. I teach in the inner city and it's very rewarding.

I think it is great to want to contribute to the inner city communities. However, many inner city neighborhoods have been products of gentrification and you might not work with your desired population of kids. There are many schools still in the surrounding areas that could use a teacher such as yourself. I am not a teacher but have worked social services in many poor urban communites and will try to answer any questions you many have.

there are significant pockets of poverty in DeKalb County and Clayton County as well.

The poor population within the City of Atlanta is actually being forced out and the reality is that DeKalb County educates far more poor and minority children than the City of Atlanta.

Default Atlanta Public Schools

I am currently a teacher in Atlanta Public Schools. If you are interested in working in a Title 1 (a.k.a. poor school) you are in luck...there are PLENTY of those in Atlanta. I live in the city, 5 minutes from Downtown in a neighborhood called Grant Park. I love living here, and the best part is I have a 2 mile commute to my job. I would like to warn you though about working for APS. I am on my way out - simply for the reason that it's all about looking accountable and not at all about the students. It's a shame..and it causes you and every passionate teacher around you to be miserable!!! When I started I thought I would not mind....but who was I trying to fool. If you want to teach, then APS is not the place to be. Good Luck!
