I need some help. I'm looking to relocte to the Atlanta area in Feb 2012 but I'm unsure of how to prepare myself. I've decided that it may be more efficent to live outside of the downtown atlanta area. But after that I'm not sure of how much to save, what to consider other than i'm a student when choosing housing, and that i'll make the move independently. I have asked my parent but she is against it; doesn't want her baby to leave. I would really appreciate any help and advice.

The biggest piece of advice I can give is to get a job here before you move. The employment situation here is fairly dire, and I'd hate to see you save up and get here, only to have to move right back.

Which area you live in depends on where you will be working and/or going to school. Atlanta traffic is pretty horrendous so you'll want to be nearby.

If you can give us some more information we can provide more help. Check out this thread: Moving to atlanta soon? Read this first and post the checklist here with your details.

Yep I know someone who learned this lesson the hard way. Was here for two months but at least she didnt let it linger and she just moved back to Michigan.

Getting a job before moving and having adequate funds to live here is a must. It is suggested to have at least half a years worth of funds in reserve, given how tough the economic situation is, I would try to have more $$ in reserve. Good luck.

Let me add that the scarcity is good jobs. Bad jobs, like retail and food service, aren't too tough to find. I see "help wanted" signs in many stores.

So, if you are an industrious person without a big ego, you can find temporary work until something better comes along. But that might be years.
