The Midtown Mile is hardly the most vibrant part of Midtown, even. Crescent Street and 10th/Piedmont have way more pedestrian activity and happy hour crowds. Even West Peachtree @ 6th - 10th rivals most of the Midtown Mile.

Between 10th and 6th there is a good bit of foot traffic on Peachtree these days--that's the best part of the Midtown Mile imo. Things should improve markedly once STK and, particularly, Cafe Intermezzo open up between 11th and 12th streets, and the whole thing will start to feel way more contiguous. Plus the new Cafe Agora at 9th street.

I'm calling BS on this (except the weather and taxes). Seriously - have you ever been to Boston? If you're comparing MARTA to the T you are wayyyy off base. And someone from Atlanta calling Boston "racist" is laughable.

Boston's public transit is WAY better than Atlanta's, although MARTA does serve the central city quite effectively for a sunbelt city.

But Boston does have a reputation for being somewhat racist. It's also one of the most white-bread major cities in the country.

I've always heard Boston was one of most racist cities. In Atlanta folks just get along.

Boston has a history of racism, yes. The infamous desegregation issues happened in 1974. Atlanta has a history of racism too, which I would argue go back much further - I don't think I have to cite references for slavery and the KKK. I don't want this thread to devolve into a racial argument, like so many others here. My point was simply that someone from GA calling Boston racist was the pot calling the kettle black.

However - thankfully, both cities are much different today -- which is what the OP inquired about. Neither is perfect, but both are leaps and bounds ahead of where they were even 20 years ago.

How is the craft beer scene? I have heard good things about Decatur?
Meant to address these earlier:

1) You just described me - I'm not into NASCAR, religion, football, hip hop, country music, or rednecks in big trucks. I currently live in a rural Atlanta suburb and see a lot more of this stuff than you would in the city (except the hiphop), and I'm still here 16 years later. Simply put...it's not hard to pursue the things I am interested in and ignore the rest. Nobody has forced me to go to church or a car race. The only time it gets annoying is when I try a new restaurant, and it turns out to be a sports bar where people are yelling at the 4,376,861 flatscreens. I just don't go back; problem solved.

2) I just discovered this place: Ale Yeah Beer
