I would recomend Murphy Candler and Brookhaven aswell in your price range,. Lots of things close by to do and a big expat community etc with lots to do very close by.

If you're a sucker for scenery have you considered a highrise?

$400k can buy a rather nice condo indeed. High floor, new construction, generous floorplan--the works.

I may look at condos but my fiance likes open space i.e garden etc. Are there any nice lakeside apartments/homes worth looking at?

Brookhaven is actually quite nice, a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. This is definately worth considering. What are the general views on Brookhaven? Is it a safe area?

Brookhaven is quite safe and lots to do with easy access to Buckhead, shopping, MARTA etc.. The Lenox Park area would be great. Also midtown might be a good option, but you would probably be in a condo or high rise. However, there is a lot to do and Piedmont Park is a great place to go on a nice day. Why not rent a place first and get to know the area then decide where to settle down?
