I love public transit..I dated a girl from the burbs in Dallas and we would take the Train to hockey games..she was scared sh|tless that she was going to get raped.
This is the exact sort of thing I'm talking about. Forget for a second the nonsensical idea that someone would get raped on a train full of people, but it also does not jibe with the reality of rape itself: 83% of the victims of rape know their attacker. In other words, you are three times more likely to be raped by someone you know than by a stranger.

It is true indeed that it is no fantasy that crime is more prevalent in urban areas, ....
I'd qualify that even a little further.
I don't think crime is necessarily more prevalent in urban areas. It is more prevalent in SOME urban areas, just as it is more prevalent in some suburban areas.

I certainly didn't mean to pick at you, waronxmas, but I do think it's a critical distinction.
Urban areas are not per se more dangerous. Nor does public transit foster crime. As you know, most areas of the city, including those served by MARTA, are perfectly safe.
We have to zero in on specific areas and their problems, and be careful not to paint with a broad brush. It's the generalizing -- without any evidence to back it up -- that gets the discussion into the woods.
You didn't say anything politically incorrect. Those of us that have grown up in the inner city are well of aware of how the outside world views us. The thing that boggles my mind is why this nonsense continues to be believed. So much so that people are literally shaking in their boots if they so happen to find themselves in the inner city.
Newsflash suburbanites: That nonsense that you see on TV and Movies about being killed just for wandering into the wrong neighborhood is mostly fantasy. Has it happened before? Yes. Are you more likely to win the lottery? Yes.
Im no suburbanite. But here is the deal.
The idea that "dumb/ignorant/bigoted suburbanites" cant differentiate between tv/movies and reality is...dumb. Suburbanites know, for example, that superheroes do not exist and that police shootouts are very rare, and that TV and movies are mostly entertainment -- even the nightly news. Besides, if they couldnt tell the difference, according to Hollywood, most criminals would indeed by white males.
Suburbanites also arent shaking in their boots, literally, or otherwise. They do, in fact, get out and about. In so doing they run into plenty of "urbanites", whether at the movie theatre, a restaurant or mall, the airport, sitting in traffic etc. Such interactions simply cant be avoided, especially in a city like Atlanta.
What they typically and frequently observe, with their own eyes and ears, is subculture(s) they do not like, do not connect with and do not want to be around (or have their kids around). Skin color is incidental. Its about culture(s) they do not value, regardless of its "diversity".
Yea yea yea, Im sure that makes them close minded and ignorant. But sorry, they just like to be around those who value the same things, like speaking proper english, wearing clothes that fit properly without "bling" and conducting oneself in a kind, courteous and modest manner.

Its really that simple.
So if the idea that these people can not differentiate between tv and reality, and spend zero time in the areas of the city they fear or riding MARTA, just where do they "observe" this behavior.

I don't care what kind of clothes people wear. I don't care about them speaking their own slang and/or dialect.
However, I care A LOT about people conducting themselves in a kind, courteous and respectful manner. Unless you have that you can't have much of a society.
I don't think suburbanites are any dumber or less sophisticated than folks who live inside the city limits.

I said they CAN differentiate between TV and reality.
Only shut ins never leave their neighborhood. Almost everyone has to go to the grocery store, the mall, the movie theatre, the airport, the gas station, whatever.
Suburbanites can and do observe such behavior. Not only that, stories are told and personal indcidents are shared, in a knowning way, about that very behavior, among themselves.
People understand when they see people with inherently different mores, values and behaviors than themsevles. And they are not attracted to it, nor do they feel compelled to "embrace diversity" merely for the sake of pandering to political correctness. In fact most people have the opposite reaction: Dont dare tell me what to think, believe or value. This is America!
I live OTP where most of my very white neighbors are afraid of the city and are simply terrified to ride MARTA. It's partly stereotype, media-hype, and lack of exposure that cause such attitudes.
As a former New Yorker, I have absolutely no problem getting on the train. As a matter of fact, if it's practical, I drive to the nearest MARTA station, park my car, and take the train.
