Default What are you people Afraid of MARTA for?

Rode it from Doraville to Midtown and back last night.

Yes I was the only white guy in the car.
No I was not raped/mugged/hassled

Maybe if I was a 100lb white girl I would sing a different tune..but wtf..I was expecting a gang war to break out on the train last night based on reading responses in here alone.

I don't think most people who ride MARTA are afraid. I know I'm not. I also don't think that every time we hear on the news about a shooting or other issue on MARTA that it does much good to draw new riders who typically would not ride but might consider it.

The funniest Marta experience that I've ever had was the old white nervous looking couple who kept glaring at a group of young black men suspiciously who from their conversation I could tell went to Morehouse.

I'm going to make a comment that I think is true, but not necessarily politically correct. If you want to know why some in the suburbs are "scared" to ride MARTA or go to the city, it's because urban is synonymous with crime, and there is a basis in truth in that association.

Now...you can deny it or make rationalizations as to why that shouldn't be, but it's the truth. I don't buy that stereotype, but let's face it, seeing the nightly news here in Atlanta is a parade of shootings and other violent crime. Many associate urban with crime and transit with urban.

MOST people are not afraid of MARTA. MARTA is simply not practical or useful where most of Atlanta lives.
