Default Atlanta-area property tax rates

What are the property tax rates for Dekalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett Counties? I can't seem to find this information anywhere. Here in MA, it's quite simple -- each town sets their own mill rate per $1000 of assessed value and you just multiply it to calculate your tax. The assessed value is also usually close to what the home is worth, so you can easily estimate the tax. I also heard there are homestead exemptions for certain counties?

You have to look on each county's website for the mill rate. They will also give you the current assessed value, it doesn't seem to be related to sales price necessarily. Here are links for fulton and cobb. I've never looked in Gwinnet and Dekalb so don't have them.

Thanks for the chart. Now my question is, do all the cities assess properties the same way? i.e. would a typical $300k house be assessed the same way in every city (so I can compare the directly compare mill rates to each other)? Either way, I'm so relieved to find property taxes here are so low. i.e. I'm looking at this $300k house in Peachtree Corners which has property taxes of $1900. The same house would probably cost about $900,000 in the city I currently live in and would be taxed around $10,000/year. Boy oh boy I can't wait to move back, but my lease doesn't end until January!

Default Actually... Forsyth County is the Cheapest :)

For property taxes, Forsyth County is the cheapest and their schools are receiving nationwide attention. South Forsyth High School was ranked one of the top 200 high schools in the country and has the only International Baccalaureate program in the tri-county area! Their milleage rate is only 24.23 and they have the highest homestead exemption at $20k.

Their school board has done so well at controlling costs that they are reducing the school tax portion for next year- 2008. This is the largest part of the tax bill. The county is growing very quickly but they have a good plan for school growth- new schools every two years. A new high school and elementary school opened this year in the south part of the county.

Norcross HS in Gwinnett also has the IB program.
