Throw a bunch of ignorant kids with prejudiced parents and bad preachers in a classroom and that's really what you got with me. Plus, you know, the KKK burning a cross on my lawn.
It's better now.. but in any very conservative, religious community, you find lots of people who take it upon themselves to "show you the light" so to speak which for me happened to involve being bullied, told I was going to hell in great detail, and not having many friends who weren't "minorities" in any way. It might be different in the elementary schools now- I don't know. Most adults and even teenagers are better equipped at dealing with stupid people like that anyway. But as a kid being bullied about your religion and being the ONLY person with that religion, it's not something that is easily understood.

I lived in Marietta for 9 months, right off the square and there were not any Jewish people... Maybe it has changed - I don't know, but everyone I met in the area I was in was a bit overly religious, Christian-wise.
Maybe the Marietta area over by Sandy Springs/Dunwoody is better?
The Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area is best - that is where I am originally from. There seems to be more Orthodox than Conservative there, though.
I live in Alpharetta, near South Forsyth now. There's a Conservative synagogue on Kimball Bridge Road - it's pretty new. There's also two Reform synagogues in Roswell, which is very close by. There are A LOT of Northerners in Alpharetta!

Not in Cumming in 1991-92 it wasn't. At that time, the police wouldn't even do anything for us. Again, times have changed.

Hi. I know this post is a little late, but I found this thread quite coincidentally, since I was googling for information on real estate and clicked on a link. I read that Forsyth County is growing and that there might be some job opportunities and wanted to see how far it is from Atlanta. The subject of Jews in Cumming caught my eye.
I am already a member of city-data (you can look up my posts to see that I'm "real.") and I've been talking about leaving FL for a long time!
I was born in Boston and spent a lot of my life in Newton which has a very large Jewish population. It honestly never dawned on me how few Jews there are in this country until college. In 1970 I spent a semester in Fort Collins CO and my roommate, who was from Nebraska, had never known a Jewish person. She turned out to be very sweet, but the first night she stared at me as if I had a third eye or antenna hidden under my nightgown.
Since the world population of Jews is less than 1/2 of 1% and the estimated percentage in the United States is less than 2%. That's why I always laugh when I hear those Mel Gibson type comments that the Jews are responsible for so much of the world's misery or that the Jews control all the banks, blah, blah.
Anyway, so I don't go way off topic, I don't have children, but I do look for synagogues, Catholic churches and groups of other minorities in an area to check for cultural diversity. One way of getting this information is to look at the census numbers. As above suggested, if you are concerned about being unwelcome because you're Jewish, you might want to contact the nearest Jewish Federation. There is also an Atlanta publication Atlanta JT Online
The reason I posted this is because, until I began house hunting and looking for jobs in other areas, I didn't realize how many states have very few Jewish families at all. This is a breakdown according to the Jewish Virtual Library. I think their numbers are a little high, but it gives you some idea of the population by state.
Jewish Population of the United States by State
Regarding the Carolinas, I am attending a family wedding in May in Charlotte at this synagogue Beth EL: Home so it looks at if Charlotte has a very active Jewish community. I am sure the Rabbi would be happy to talk to you. Also, for about a year I've done extensive research on SC and all of the major cities (Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Spartanburg) have synagogues.
There is an organization in Atlanta Southern Jewish Historical Society that might also be able to answer some questions.

Theres also one in Gwinett
and he said that it will be tough out that a way. I mean serious skinhead stuff. Why Cumming even if you're not particularly religious?

you really need to look at Toco
You have 4 Orthodox synagogues, a Schecter school as well as Orth. ones and all the kosher food you need or want. Used to live there 20 plus years ago and would move back there if I were going to aTL. It's not far from Buckhead at all and you ahve the cultural advantages of ATL right near by. YOU can do a great house for 300K. I'm not sure what the less Orthodox synagogue situation is but the area isn't Boro Park or Mea Sharim. You'll be ok even if you're not frum but you will be fish out of water elsewhere. A lot of the Jews in the burbs are very assimilated. Still my friend who is totally secular and grew up in ATL still squirms being surrounded by her gentile friends especially around holidays fi you know what I mean.

So I thought that if that tendency is moving towards Alpharetta than I might want to look in the south of South Forsyth county. It seems like I could get a little more of a house for the money there…I just wanted to make sure that it’s not a purely Christian area, where a Jewish family form Phyla would feel extremely out of place…

My wife would like to live in a place where there is a jewish population.
She would like to attend synagogue services etc.
I was looking for places in Smyrna.

Why are Jews so paranoid about "Anti-Semitism". Sheesh!
