I came to ATL last year and Visions was a very popular club, and I also went to various clubs in Buckead. Went back a few weeks ago, Visions dissapeared into thin air, and Buckhead was a ghost town.....
Whats going on with these spots? The only club that seemed to have any activity was compound........ |

A large group of clubs in Buckhead have been closed down and demolition has started. The crowds where getting out of control, with stabbings, fights, etc., and the residents weren't happy, so one of them who is a developer has bought up the whole group and is replacing them with highend residences.

Vision shut down last year and that area is being turned into condos.

In all, 8 acres (or more) of the old Buckhead bar/village area will be torn down and replaced by higher end condos, hotels, and very high dollar retail stores.
Details: The Streets Of Buckhead P.S. There's no need to panic with so many "??????" in a subject line. |

Long story short. This has been brewing for years. There have been many controversial acts of violence dating back before one of Baltimore Ravens Ray Lewis' buddies stabbed a man to death at a Buckhead club on Super Bowl weekend. There has also been noise, urinating in public, traffic problems, etc. Neighbors of these bars have been complaining increasingly for years. Finally, after a deadly shoot out in Buckhead involving bodygaurds of rapper/music mogul P-diddy, Atlanta took action. Bars and Clubs hours were limited to 1:00 AM. Before many clubs stayed open to 5:00 AM and a couple 24 hours. Police cracked down hard on partiers and bars. Many lost liquour licenses and more complained that with earlier closing they were losing money. All in all it seems Midtown and Buckhead are trying to change their image from that of Party Central more to upscale dinning, shopping and living meccas.

Sounds positive to me, I work in the media and enjoy a good club experience but not a bad one, it amazes me that when violence is actioned by a celebrity or in association with a celebrity it is "glossed" over as acceptable.

They aren't limited til 1AM, it's 2:30 last call, close at 3
That said, many good clubs outside Butthead had to close b/c of that stupid law (which was intended to promote Underground, but didn't work, b/c no one wants to go to Underground Atlanta) |

It's actually a bit better in Atlanta because more "Urban Nightlife" has developed over the years from the "big box" club to more lounges & bars that serve food & live entertainment venues which are better in my opinion and offer a more distinct & varied atmosphere.
You can find really good varied nightlife here intown than you used to a few years ago @ spots like Verve, D'Jango, MBar, Slice, Noir & The Castleberry Hill District, Strip, Lobby @12 & The whole Atlantic Station Complex Trois, Tap, Lotus Lounge, Halo, Sutra Lounge, Leopard Lounge, Opera, Rare, Harlem Bar, Barley's Billiards, Compound & Velvet Room, The Mark and the wealth of clubs in The Underground complex like Sugarhill, Motion, House (Even though the Underground is not my type of scene Sugarhill is a live music venue with alot of top R&B, Neo-Soul, Classic Hip Hop Acts, Spoken Word Artists that I will attend someday). No one goes to UA except the hiphop crowd. People consider it dangerous at night, and architecturally it's not an attractive place any longer.
The city has no business telling people when to close down, and it reeks of why Music Midtown is no longer held. People move into the city, built it up to have thriving nightclubs, music and art scene...and then all the NIMBY people move in from the suburbs and want everything quiet. Reason 11, Why I left Atlanta. (I dont mean to sound so bitter but I really am convinced that Atlanta is doing all the wrong things over the past 10+ yrs) |

Quote:
It's about moderation and respect of those around you. Music Midtown, Freaknik... large roudy gatherings that have loud music can be heard for more than a mile from the venue. People LIVE around those places. When bars let out at 3-4am and the drunks pour onto the streets yelling, drag racing, playing loud Rap from the cars... this can all be heard by thousands of residents that live nearby. It has nothing to do with suburbanites moving to the city and wanting "everything to be quiet". There aren't THAT many suburbanites moving into the heart of the city. ANYONE that lives in the city expects a certain amount of "city noise" (ambulance, police car, music during day/early evening), but there is no way you can expect anyone to put up with loud music and patrons on the street at 3AM. That's unreasonable whether you live in Atlanta, Chattanooga, or New York City. There is acceptable urban noise during those hours and there is unacceptable noise. Bands playing outdoors at 1am or bar patrons being roudy at 3am are unacceptable no matter where you are. |
