Any good recommendations for weekend getaways in the mountains with the family?

Living in Florida, the big destination growing up was always Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. I'm still burnt out on these places, but any other recommendations that might be a good weekend getaway from Atlanta area?

Watuga? Roan? What's good in the blue ridge?

A few weeks ago, we rented a house, with another couple, in Highlands, NC and it was great. A short drive from Atlanta, with lots of hiking, shopping, restaurants, tennis, golf....

I strongly suggest looking at what the Georgia state parks have to offer.

My favorite, Vogel State park is about as family friendly a place as you are ever going to find with a lake, streams, trails ,camping ,cabins

you can check them out at Georgia State Parks - Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites

Highlands: FAKE, FAKE, FAKE

Oh yes, lovey. Let's order champagne while eating caviar. Don't forget your fur coat, and I'll not forget the suede jacket, khaki pants and hair gel.

Please. That place is nothing more than a hangout for the wealthy to show off their "toys" and their "wealth".

Leave the kids with the grandparents....or anyone you can find to watch them and rent a B&B near Dahlonega....get up the next day after a wonderful "adult moment" and visit several of the wine vineyards in the Dahlonega area....some of which serve lunch.....then back to real life...thank me later.

Oh heavens. Highlands is. Beautiful place. Lots to do, nice shops and restaurants. The Old Edwards Inn is a treat. Yes, it's not rustic and is fairly upscale. But perhaps not everyone is into rustic. It's certainly not "fake" for Pete's sake.

A lot of people hate Helen, but for families with kids in your age range it's great -- a little slice of Disney fakery and fantasy in the mountains, surrounded by plenty of natural scenery. Oktoberfest is going on through the end of the month -- LOTS of Beer Gardens! Amiacalola Falls / Unicoi State Park and Brasstown Bald (highest point in Ga) are very close by. And the GREAT little town of Dahlonega is a nearby drive as well -- wonderiung shopping, restaurants, wineries for you to enjoy and gold panning for the kids!
