In IL, which at one time was third, behind only NV and NJ, in legalized gambling, they are considering even more casinos, even though a new one just opened. Some studies say whatever money they bring in is offset by more crime and problem gambling. Tread carefully.

Video lottery casinos? Yuck. Those are best left in the backs of gas stations.

Go for a real casino or nothing at all.

Does anyone find these numbers suspect? 10,000 terminals creating $1B revenue for the state means $100,000 contribution per terminal per year. Operating ~312 days/yr (b/c we know they'll shut down for church), every machine needs to contribute over $300/day to the state. Either GA plans on taking 80-90% of the till(who is paying for the machines?) or this # is for total money spent gambling. Either way, it's a gross exaggeration and pure spin. If Deal follows Perdue's footsteps, he'll give the gaming company $1B in tax breaks, lease the machines for them, and provide the muscle to rough up cheaters in exchange for a press conference announcing 25 jobs that pay $10/hr. We all know GA's state gov't can't possibly make a deal that isn't massively advantageous for some special interest.

NJ, home to Atlantic City w/ 13 physical casinos (almost 18,000 hotel rooms) brings home ~$300M/yr in tax revenue. 22 Either GA gamblers are truly degenerates w/ wads of cash (mostly SS/disability checks) ready to blow or this study was really paid for by a gaming firm w/ a warehouse full of video poker machines. Going by their #'s, 2M Georgians willing to spend $500-800/yr works out to 1B-1.6B in revenue. That discounts the hundreds of millions spent on machines, maintenance, security, and payouts. The study also claims that there's no overlap w/ lottery players...then again Deal would probably love the opportunity to siphon funds toward his own pet projects (10 lane highway to nowhere on whatever property he has left).

Pennsylvania is the closest comparison and it brings in $1.3B on 26,000 slot machines (55% tax rate). They also have a larger state population and significant crossover from nearby states. Either we're far more aggressive gamblers or the #'s are crap. Where's my 91k?
States' casino tax revenue tops $7 billion

I don't have a problem with casino's, I just don't think the state needs to be in that business. Let MGM, Harrahs, etc open their own casinos and collect whatever taxes but the state does not need to be the actual casino owner.

I work in the casino industry but don't know much about video poker. In the typical casino, Slots is where the money is from a pure volume standpoint. On average casino's collect 6 cents on every dollar dropped in the machine (reasonable profit margin). When someone loses $100, someone else may win $88 - the difference is $6 (x2) that the casino collected from each of the players. If you are in Vegas and playing at a luxury casino, the casino win % may be closer to 8% vs. a rural basic casino where the win % is closer to 5%. For the casino to boost profits, it is a volume game and they need to drive guests into their casino's.

The assumption in Atlanta is that much of that volume is driven by the convention business and not as much from the local residents athough that make a nice base business during non peak times.

It has already been pointed out, but just to be clear.... they are not discussing opening "real" casinos. What they are talking about are basically adult versions of video game arcades, filled with video lottery machines tied in to the Georgia lottery - nothing more. No slot machines or card games, etc.

As my Grandfather used to say... "Do it right, or don't do it".

If someone has addictive tendencies, they're going to be addicted to something until they get the root cause of addiction solved. If they're an alcoholic and beat that aspect of it, they still have an addiction issue, and are much more prone than the average person to becoming addicted to something else (drugs, food, porn, gambling, etc). In other words, if someone has a problem with something and you take that something away from them, you're not curing them - you are most likely simply steering them toward something else, until the actual addiction problem they have is addressed. So while some are arguing that bring a "real" casino to the state would cause people to become gambling addicts, nothing is further from the truth - they already have addictive issue before the first casinos even open.

I support full, real, casinos provided they're done right, and each facility has a high standard regarding security on their property. How we spend our money to entertain ourselves should not be the issue - we're adults and this isn't a communist state. Those who have problems do have resources they should seek out for help, but everyone cannot be held responsible for a very small percentage who can't control themselves - otherwise we might as well ban all liquor, junk food, and close all retail stores to accommodate everyone who has some issue.

I wish they would get over that bible belt mess and bring casinos here. It used to get old having to go to Shorter or Biloxi just to gamble.

A full blown casino in Savannah would be great for the tourism industry here....

Here are a few improvements I would like down here.

1.) 3 full blown casinos with table games and poker.
2.) A cruise ship terminal.
3.) A 4 lane highway to Hilton Head.

If we had this Savannah would be one of the top vacation destinations in the U.S.

This would be how it played out... People come down to vacation a week at Hilton Head and come, play golf and beach during the day and come over to gamble at night. After a week they jump on a cruise come back after a few days and stay and gamble then go home.
