My fiance and I are considering a move to Atlanta to be closer to her family. We have a 9 month old son, and another in the oven (I know, I know) that we found out about just yesterday. Yay babies! We are both young. She's 24 and graduated from UF, I'm 25 and have been attending night classes at our community college with plans to transfer to a university. She's an artist and I'm a chef, so we're not exactly the richest family on the block. We tend to gravitate more toward the boho/hipster side of things, and while we're in the age group for little five points, I'm assuming it isn't the best place to raise children. So what's the best place for us? Where do hipsters go to raise kids in Atlanta?

Any neighborhood on the eastside of Atlanta. With kids I might suggest Kirkwood. Great neighborhood, with good schools, lots of parks and bike trails. Houses are decent and the crime is low. Proximity to MARTA, Decatur, Little 5 Points, East Atlanta, & Downtown Atlanta. My wife and I just moved and love the area.

Any neighborhood around Little 5 Points is actually quite good and child friendly (Candler Park, Inman Park, Poncey Highlands) but they are also rather pricey. In addition to Kirkwood, you may also want to check out Cabbagetown, Grant Park or the Old 4th Ward.

East Atlanta area sounds good to me based on what you describe. I would choose that area based on what you seem to like.

Surprisingly, of all the neighborhoods mentioned above, Reynoldstown has the lowest crime rate (according to CL). However, Kirkwood is a close second and has a much more kid-friendly residential environment. Plus, the public elementary school (Toomer) is surprisingly good and getting better (regardless of how the APS redistricting turns out).
