Yup. We made it to the moon from essentially scratch in less than 10 years. Americans can achieve a lot when we put our minds to something. Besides, the need to convert to trains, if it comes, is unlikely to give us short notice.

You're really on a roll.

We've already been given notice and look at how you're responding to it.

Well, we can't give you a beach and ocean but if it's people wearing green and pretending to be Irish...we can be as good as anyone if we want to!

Not really. Trains aren't what we need now. People are more concerned about commuting costs, not about going to Savannah or anywhere else. The market will push trains and CSX and Norfolk Southern, once the profitability kicks in, will be ready.

I think there were several factors, Mathman. For one thing the big train stations had been torn down, so there were fewer connections. Also, I think it was partly just the times. The interstates were just coming online and gas was cheap. It was the automobile age!

That was also about the time the aviation industry really took off (sorry, couldn't resist) in Atlanta. Flying was cool!

Trains, especially older ones that hadn't been kept up, seemed a little dated. Air conditioning on the older trains wasn't exactly fantastic, and riding with the windows down is not always a good option.

Moreover, Amtrak was taking over passenger trains at that point, and they weren't putting much emphasis on the South. Central of Georgia had merged into Southern, and Southern had made the decision to get out of the passenger biz and go strictly freight. There really wasn't anyone to champion the passenger lines, so they went away.

Well, if there is a market, even if it is nostalgic, it can return. It's just that I've heard talk about the "Brain Train" and Macon commuter line for so long and nothing happens. I'm guessing that costs are too high. Even Amtrak with its federal subsidies is still an expensive way to travel.
