Apparently, we're getting a new one.

I've written all I can about this in a reasonable amount of time on my blog, but being vastly unacquainted with city government, I still have no idea what a COO does. It bugs me, just because it's such a high office in Atlanta and I don't even know what it is. Is it basically like an efficiency-enforcing office?

Think of it as a supervisor on steroids with executive power (decision making). It varies a lot company to company exactly which aspects are under your control/oversight.

Think of it as a manager that is directly involved with the day to day operations: purchasing, authorization, contractual obligations, suppliers, staffing matters. Can be anything and everything or very few things, depending on the magnitude.

In the logistics/transportation industry, they pretty much run the whole thing. Same for manufacturing. Less influence in banking and such industries
