Default New SAT scores for Atlanta high schools.

Northview high beats Walton high in SAT scores and has highest SAT in Atlanta area and second highest in the state of Georgia.

You know, all these scores tell me is the demographic makeup of the schools. If you adjust for demographics, Decatur and Grady beat Walton and Northview every year. For example, using the DOE data from 05/06 (I don't have 06/07 disaggregated yet), Decatur and Grady would have scores of 1787 and 1778 respectively if you adjust for demographics and income level so that they match the demographics of schools like Northview and Walton.

That would put Decatur and Grady High more than 60 points above the #1 school in the state for this year, Davidson Magnet.

Decatur and Grady are diverse schools. They have kids from all walks of life who have all sorts of different home lives and family expectations. Diverse schools are going to have lower averages on aptitude tests even though a large percentage of their students are superstars. That needs to change - but for the time being - that's the way it is.

"Take that all you Northview and Walton snobs!!!"

P.S. I don't really think you are snobs.

These discussions of school ratings always make me laugh - I feel like people are discussing their college football teams, considering how bent out of shape everyone gets about it. Bottom line - unless the average score is under 1400-1500, they are all basically the same academically. It's not like 20-100 pts in average for an entire school is going to make or break a kid's life chances. I went to a very average high school that was very mixed demographically and came out of it pretty good - we had kids who lived in apartments (gasp!) and got free lunches and never completed school, and we also had a kid that scored perfect on the SAT's TWICE! I'm guessing the kid that nailed the SAT and went on to Oxford did not really let the other kids bring him down, probably b/c his education started at home, where he learned what it took to succeed and what to value...well before he could be corrupted by the kids at his school.

Wow, I didn't realize GA high school's SAT scores were so LOW! All the top MA high schools (maybe the top 10 or 20 HS) topped 1800, with one even reaching 1870! What happened over the last few years? When I was in HS, Walton regularly had scores of around 1200 (back when there were only 2 sections).

What percentage of students take the test in each state?

Minnesota scores tend to be very good, but neither the SAT nor the ACT is a mandatory test up there so typically only college-bound students will take it.

That can bias the average considerably.

I live in N Fulton (unfortunately) and if you check out the names of the top scorers you will find most of them are Asian. That is what keeps schools like Chattahoochee at the top. The schools here lack so much in every other area unless u play football of course

My wife went to private school with a graduating class of 26. She said the avg SAT score for her class was 1450 and the lowest-ranked student still scored above 1200 and attended Purdue. Oh yeah, and about 1/3 of her class has either attended or is currently attending Harvard. Haha.. I don't think you can compare private to public
