I don't think many of the area country clubs will have problems accepting blacks.

It's all about the money. I don't think there are many restricted country clubs left. If there were, the economy probably rooted them all out. Country clubs have really been struggling with the bad economy.

So if you have the $15-$25,000 initiation fee, I think you'll find plenty of clubs willing to take you as a member.

He may not be. There was a time when Jews had trouble getting into country clubs, which is how they estabilshed the Jewish country club....which as we all know, ended up being among the finest clubs in the country.

So if Jews had trouble getting into clubs at one time, I would assume blacks did as well.

Those days are long gone, at least around here. There may be some ultra, ultra selective clubs out there still, but they would certainly make up the great minority.

What happens to folks who are openly gay and try to join with their partner?

It's true in Birmingham. I've read some things about how racist the country clubs are over there.

I'd bet there are plenty of clubs that would accept a wealthy, socially prominent black member over lower class white members, however.

I know this has been an issue even in Tiger Woods's career, whereas he's played at some country clubs that would never have him as a member. Back in the late eighties/early nineties there was an issue at a Birmingham country club that wouldn't accept black members. Apparently PGA wouldn't sanction some golf tournament there so they got their first black member.
