So my friend and I are moving to the Atlanta Area. He's moving his family within 30 days and I am waiting until next summer when my daughter is out of school.

We are debating whether to pursue a home in Stone Mountain or Alpharetta.

Just off internet research I am liking Alpharetta for proximity to North Point Mall, Mt. Pisgah Christian School and seemingly diverse and well scoring Public school system.

He like Stone Mountain/Lithonia area for price and mentioned that its an easier commute to Downtown Atlanta.

Any opinions of the 2 areas?

Stone Mtn has a reputation for high crime. Last month the guy who runs my local package store was mugged, shot and killed when returning to his home in Stone Mtn after work. The killing appears to be completely random. Granted it was something like one in the morning but if I didn't feel safe walking from my car in my driveway to my house at anytime I wouldn't want to live in the neighborhood.

Default -

Just be careful about the commute to downtown from alpharetta..it will take about an hour each way during rush hour.

Also, I live near North Point Mall..it is pretty run-down and not very nice for an upscale suburb. However a new outdoor type mall is being built in alpharetta and it is supposed to be great.

Ditto.. I know a couple of people who moved to Stone Mountain many years ago and they've moved out recently - it's one of the areas experiencing a change for the worse, unfortunately.

Alpharetta in general is much nicer, though the commute via GA400 will be hairier.

Alpharetta is much ritzier.....and the traffic on GA 400 is insane.
Stone Mountain...it has it's nice and not so nice parts. It's very diverse.
Lithonia is a decent area...however the traffic is insane.

May want to try Duluth ga if you want diversity and good school. In my neighborhood, we got 1/3 Asians, 1/3 white and 1/3 blacks. Most people are pretty wealthy (at least they all drive better cars than I do).

I live in Alpharetta....well the beginning tip of it! I love it....it is a little pricy in certain areas, especially further North in Alpharetta. You are right, the schools are 200% better! I have only lived in Georgia a little over a year and have lived almost all of it in Alpharetta. We are looking to move , and we ruled out Stone Mountain after looing at the school test scores. Alpharetta is yes mainly white people, and yes Stone Mountain is more African American. Traffic is bad on 400 during work hours....but traffic is bad in Atlanta period! I live off of 400 and the commute to downtown is not far at all....I think Stone Mountains proximity to Downtown is further. We are also looking in the area of Tucker. I do not know much about Atlanta either, so I am doing my research just as you are......but I would love to stay in Alpharetta!

Default Alpharetta has much better schools

If schools are important to you, North Fulton (Where Alpharetta is located) is the cream of the crop. But it is not exactly diverse up here...
