Can we talk about Union City
In my continued effort to find a safe, decent and affordable home, I noticed that there were a number of nice new homes in Union City. I have not seen any discussion regarding Union City here. It seems close to Atlanta. Closer than Peachtree, Atlanta's safest city. Please enlighten me.

A decade ago, Union City was considered irrelevant in the great Atlanta migration. Today, the area is completely different. Union City and all of South Fulton have been developing like wildfire. There are tons of housing options for all lifestyles and price ranges. Retail is still lacking, but it's on it's way. There are a lot of LARGE shopping centers under way around south fulton parkway especially among other areas. The best thing is that it's so close to Atlanta. Union City is less than 20 minutes from downtown. The area is mainly attractring black professionals. I would definitely check it out.

Union City is experiencing tremendous growth. It is just up Interstate 85 from Peachtree City. It has Shannon Mall and car alley with all the dealerships up and down Hwy.54. If you are looking in this area you might want to look at Newnan. There is a lot of new homes and has some of the southside's best subdivisions and builders. Summer Grove for example is an outstanding community. It is growing and is just southwest of Peachtree City and about 45 minutes to Atlanta and 30 minutes to the airport. Going south on Interstate 85 is the new KIA plant in the Columbus area it is about 45 minutes south of there...Let me know if I can help...Bill

How are the schools in Union City? Are there good elementary and high schools in this area?

I googled the zip code that I was interested in 30291 and discovered that Bear Creek Middle and Creekside High were not high scoring schools. The elementary schools seemed to fair better. I'll keep looking!

Yes, Bear Creek got a new principal last year and they are in transition; most people don't want their kids in a "transition" environment until the school comes together.
Why don't you check out the Union City area off South Fulton Parkway? It used to be Fairburn, but, they've rezoned everything. Or, any area along South Fulton Parkway/Hwy 92. They just built a new middle school, Renaissance Middle, and next year they will build Renaissance High. This area contains a more desirable area of people to live around (I guess) than the 30291 zip code. That whole area is up and coming and is going to be the next Sandtown/Camp Creek area.

Lets talk about Union City
ATLienGirl,
Tell me about Sandtown, I saw that name listed as a school when I was looking up schools on the internet. Do you know anything about it? It seemed to also be a low scoring school, however the area that it was listed in was supposed to be an ultra progressive, up and coming neighborhood.

Yes, Sandtown is the area of Southwest (actually unincorporated Atlanta) and is an up and coming area; they have completely torn down an area called Boat Rock which used to have projects but is now replaced with 200K plus homes. I know A.Phillip Randolph Elementary is a great school; even though Sandtown Middle's scores may not be up to par, the principal there is phenomenal and is doing great things at that school...remember, in those scores, children with Special Needs are included. There are so many other factors that determine a great school although some people on this forum don't think so. I speak for the southside, you know, the area no one wants to move to that is up and coming.

Seems Union City has police with attitudes. Hear about the McDonalds worker getting arrested for selling a cop a salty hamburger there? Talk about abuse of power! Poor kid. He should not get any more free donuts, he might arrest them for making him fatter (ha). What a joke for that town. He should be required to work in the McDonalds kitchen for a year as community service! That is worse than the hot coffee lawsuit. Sounds like UC needs a chill pill when the Bulldogs get beat.

McDonald's employee charged after serving oversalted burger
Only in Atlanta. If people get arrested for things like this it amazes me that there is so much talk about crime in Atlanta. You'd think it should be the safest place in America.
