The Black population in Atlanta is declining, at least the latest Census data will say so.

Where are the blacks relocating? Are they still remaining in the south?

They are moving to the suburbs of atl. Houses are cheaper in the suburbs. The decline of blacks is due.to housing.projects being torn down. Same as dc. Blacks moving from.se dc to.the burbs

They are moving to the burbs which is going to be interesting how it play out in the next few years, as most signs point to the suburbs declining as a whole economically. Especially in Atlanta and similar cities where mass transit is a joke and commuting 1+hours doesn't make sense anymore economically.

I agree here in metro ATL black people are moving moreso to the burbs. There are already a lot of us there but more are moving because of cheaper, bigger houses/yards and better schools. I actually moved to the city from the burbs because I'm an opposite kind of person :-) but honestly we are looking at moving back to the Midwest away from Atlanta on a whole to Chicago but mostly due to an employment opportunity and to be closer to family.

In terms of sheer numbers, the decline in the black population (~30,000) was quite small compared to the massive net increase in the black population (~500,000) across the metro. So yeah, there were probably a few things at play: many went to the burbs, some went to other cities, and some moved into the city as well (in higher income areas like Buckhead, the black population almost uniformly increased).

Movement of blacks into the burbs is not necessarily due to cheap housing but in many cases due to the upward mobility of the black population.

Many blacks are moving into traditional white neighborhoods due to location to middle class/professional jobs and excellent schools

Default White Flight 2012?

Most actions are followed by reactions. History has taught us that whites of various European ancestries migrate away from racially mixed regions, i.e. "white flight". So, a better question might be, if blacks are moving to suburban Atlanta, where are whites moving to?

Part of the answer is: Back into Atlanta. It's no secret there has been a lot of gentrification in areas of Atlanta that used to be dumps and the whites are moving back. The West Midtown area is one example. Grant Park is/was another area making a comeback. We all know traffic is hell OTP, so moving back ITP makes a lot of sense if living in town appeals to you.

Blacks are moving into the suburbs and exurbs.

Closer to work and transit options. Hour long commutes are becoming uneconomic and as the economy improves the price of gas will begin to creep towards $4/gallon and beyond. Houses in the suburbs lost value after the bubble burst and homes in established neighborhoods hold their value better than new or partially built subdivisions.
