What's your price range and where are you planning to work? Those two things will make it easier to offer suggestions.

First of all, don't be scared. But do consider very carefully where to live and work.
If you are going to have any kind of life outside of work & commuting, you need to
live CLOSE to work, or live and work close to a MARTA rail line. Find the job first.
Secondly, what are you looking for: nightlife / peace & quiet? What sort of activities?
Shopping / horseback riding aren't often found in the same areas. More info would help.

Marietta is a nice city, good priced homes, and isn't a terrible commute to midtown or Buckhead but you're better off having a job in Cobb County if you move to Marietta. There are also many jobs in Kenessaw or Cumberland, but I'd look first to see if you can find jobs in Marietta, Cumberland, or Kenessaw before you decide on Marietta. If you aren't sure where you'll work, you may be better off moving to Smyrna because it's quite a bit better of a commute to midtown and Buckhead, so you'd have more options.
Of all areas in metro Atlanta, Cobb County probably has one of the lowest crime rates.

Woodstock!!
Woodstock Ga has my vote. In fact..I just bought a house there. It has a crime rate of 21/100,
based on 100 for national avg. The schools are top 4 in the state. I had the best real estate agent if you need help. He treated us like we were spending a million dollars.
name..Bob Watson. He will answer all the questions for you better than me. here is his website:
Homes in North Atlanta, Marietta, Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Vinings, Smyrna, Dunwoody, Norcross, Cobb, Fulton and Gwinnett Counties.

If you're white, I'd argue that Cherokee is the best.
