I guess that's it. Try saying "Hedgewood's Woodstock" three times in row really fast.

I'll put in a bid for Acworth. We visited their downtown recently and I was really impressed. Lots of activity and attractive old buildings. It's not as big as Roswell's or Woodstock's, but it has some real charm. I particularly like how well it blended in with the surrounding houses. So many downtown areas are immediately surrounded by a gulf of parking lots (or free standing businesses like fast-food places and banks), creating an odd separation. Acworth has escaped that.

Other than that, I think my favorite suburban downtowns are Woodstock (an incredible development -- though it needs some more stores) and Marietta (biased since I was born & raised there).

Was wondering why no one mentioned Acworth yet, one of the nicest in the metro. Agree with the others on Marietta, Roswell and Alpharetta.

Smyrna needs props for recreating a town center when none existed after Atlanta Road was widened a few years back.

Most any of the surrounding county seats have nice older districts, but then you are getting far out from town. Newnan has a fantastic courthouse square with beautiful historic homes in all directions. Cartersville has a nice downtown as well. Griffin's downtown has been used for many movies because of its classic southern charm along with Covington where "In the Heat of the Night" with Carroll O'Connor was filmed. Futher south, LaGrange has one of the most beautiful squares in the state full of mature oaks encircling a beautiful fountain and a statue of LaFayette and a very thriving downtown surrounding. Of course this is outside metro Atlanta and I am straying, but go for a visit sometime.

I think on the Southside (Southern Crescent), McDonough and Griffin's downtown squares are the most quaint and attractive. Fayetteville's a good runner up.

Downtown Cartersville is very nice. It has a Smithsonian art museum, several very nice restaurants. Plenty of clothing stores, covering urban to upper middle class. Several different festivals are held there and even has bars/clubs.

What about suburban villages?

Brookhaven Village: Dresden Drive is adorable. You could get a nice home in Ashford Park within walking distance.

Also, look at Dunwoody Village. Nice homes within walking distance of a Williamsburg-style town center.
