I'm planning a trip to Atlanta on Labor Day weekend with a few mates. We'll be going to Dragon Con and the Chick Fil A Bowl. We are also renting a car, What will traffic be like? And will Atlanta be too overcrowded to handle? The reason i ask was cause we were in New York last year for Labor day weekend and we were just bumping in to everybody cause it was too overcrowded and wanted to leave the city cause of it. Can't wait to go back to Atlanta though

It's one of the best and busiest weekends of the year in ATL. Traffic will be plentiful, so plan the trip so that you don't have to drive much. You can make do on foot and MARTA.

I never mind the crowds if I'm having fun. You should come see us in Savannah GA for St Pats in a month! Being on a Saturday this year, they're expecting well in excess of a half million people will cram into this city of 135,000!

Expect gridlock.

Between Dragoncon, black gay pride, and everybody driving through Atlanta trying to get one last trip to the beach in, roads will be crowded.

Okay, it probably won't be gridlock, but expect delays.

It sounds like MARTA will get you a lot of the places you need to go, and that might be your best option for getting around. If weather is nice, don't skip Piedmont Park, an easy walk from the 10th Street MARTA station.

And don't forget to research and figure out how to get invited to the unofficial after hours Dragoncon parties!

Consistently the best weekend of the year in Atlanta in my opinion. Atlanta never seems too overcrowded because its so spread out, you should be fine. If you are going to Dragoncon and the Chick-fil-a bowl, you won't be driving much anyways, those events are both downtown. Nascar is in town that weekend too if want a full southern culture experience.

Don't forget the Decatur Book Festival, which has grown to a very large event.

Take MARTA, its your best bet and a great way to really experience Atlanta. Passes are cheap and daily parking is free. Direct connection to the airport.

Booked Atlanta for 8 days, staying in Marietta and the car is included. Do you guys recommend we check out Savannah? Also, what way will the weather be in ATL end of August, early September?

Let me understand you correctly? You are flying into Hartsfield, renting a car and driving to your hotel in Marietta? Your primary events are Dragon Con & Chik Fil A bowl? If so, you should consider a change in itinerary if possible. Not only will you experience traffic congestions, but your parking tab and traffic frustrations will be quite expensive during the events and exceed any savings you gain by staying out in Marietta, gas, car rental etc. However let's focus on your question.

Weather will be HOT, probably high 80s low 90's and humid. Since you are driving, a trip to Savannah would be cool. I think 8 days in Atlanta for vacation is too long unless you do some serious planning (Any City really except maybe NYC). I would take the last 2 days of your trip and go to Savannah. It's a nice place, but the weather will be even hotter and humid there.
