Default MARTA request to provide service outside its area turned down

This was a "creative" way to get MARTA service outside Fulton and Dekalb, but unfortunately it did not work.

MARTA request to provide service outside its area turned down

“The state House Transportation Committee Tuesday rejected a MARTA request to be able to contract to provide rail services in areas outside Fulton and DeKalb counties...”

Don't they run a bus up to Cumberland Mall?

Yes -- there is a #12 bus that goes to the Cumberland transfer center.

I think this initiative was more about getting "rail" and key bus service to other counties.

So it's ok if we let Gwinnett Transit and CCT (Cobb County Transit) cross into our borders but it's not ok for MARTA to do so?

Good luck having CCT or GCT run a rail-based transit. MARTA has been doing it longer than anyone but NYC, Chicago, Boston, or Philly. MARTA woulda been a contractor to run the rails, but have the other county transit collect the revenues and pay MARTA. The current system does not work by having GRTA compete against GCT, CCT, and MARTA for express bus service. GRTA just needs to absorb all the transit systems and force them to work together. Let MARTA run rails and GRTA run buses.

That was the original ultimate plan when Roy Barnes basically created GRTA - that eventually they would oversee ALL Atlanta regional transit, make the decisions as to where bus/rail would go, etc. Sonny Perdue squished that when he got in office and drastically reduced funding for the agency.

Back to "plan B" (oh, wait, I don't think they ever had a plan B).

The biggest joke as a governor. He did nothing for the Atlanta metro area, everything went to central and south GA. Maybe Deal can get GRTA back on track, he seems to be doing good so far in office.

Let GRTA do commuter rail two, marta can take care of urban rail (hrt, streetcar).
