Default Neighborhood Map - Seeking input from Atlanta locals

Are these neighborhood boundaries/names correct?

GIS Image/ Map Catalog

Left Column > Base Maps > All NPU

I'm thinking about putting together a typographic neighborhood map for Atlanta, similar to the ones seen here:

I know that actually defining neighborhoods can be sticky, but it's easier in some cities than in others.

Did the city get it right here... or were they way off the mark?

Atlanta locals, I'm looking for your input!

i was actually thinking about this the other day when i saw this t-shirt in urban outfitters, with a map of manhattan on it, and a division of all the neighborhoods, i thought it was really cool, it looked a little bit more hand-drawn than the ones above. i tried to recreate it with atlanta but failed.

since there are so many neighborhoods in atlanta (over 250 i think), maybe you should only do "intown" atlanta:

1. West Lake
2. Hunter Hills
3. Washington Park
4. Vine City
5. Mozley Park
6. Just Us
7. Ashview Heights
8. Atlanta University Center
9. Westview
10. West End
11. Adair Park
12. Pittsburgh
13. Mechanicsville
14. Castleberry Hill
15. Summerhill
16. Grant Park
17. Oakland Cemetery
18. Cabbagetown
19. Ormewood Park
20. East Atlanta
21. Reynoldstown
22. Edgewood
23. Kirkwood
24. East Lake
25. Lake Claire
26. Candler Park
27. Druid Hills
28. Virginia Highland (in the lower right corner, there is Atkins Park, i forgot to circle that).
29. Poncey-Highlands
30. Inman Park
31. Little Five Points
32. Old Fourth Ward
33. Sweet Auburn
34. Downtown
35. West Midtown
36. 'Howell Station' or 'Knight Park', use either.
37. Georgia Tech
38. Home Park
39. Midtown
40. Five Points
41. Atlantic Station
42. Loring Heights
43. Berkeley Park
44. Ansley Park
45. Morningside
46. Piedmont Park

Under Boundary Maps, click "City Council, NPU and Neighborhood Boundaries."

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Go to the city's NPU page and scroll down to the map. When click on each NPU, it will take you to a detailed map of all officially defined neighborhoods within that NPU.

There's also a link to an alphabetical list of neighborhoods.

guys, what he wants is what the locals call the neighborhoods— that's what i was trying to give him above. for example, no one calls the area around ansley mall "piedmont heights" or refers to west midtown as "marietta street artery".

Just because the average Atlantan doesn't know the proper name for a neighborhood doesn't mean it's not so. I'm pretty sure the residents of Piedmont Heights will tell you that their neighborhood does indeed exist, even if most people would just call it "Midtown" or Morningside.

Btw OP, I've always wanted someone to do this, so good luck - I'll buy a print!

Au contraire. They both have active neighborhood associations. Being officially recognized and having your borders officially defined is a big deal. That's how you get representation in your NPU and it gives you much more clout when you're dealing with both local and citywide issues. They have elected boards and officers and typically have committees for land use, parks, public safety, etc.

Trust me, neighborhoods tend to be very protective of their boundaries and prerogatives. And it's no small thing to get a new one recognized. It ain't just a name.
