Just information for teachers looking, here are the starting salaries for both Bachelor's and Master's Degree Teachers in the Metro Area. These are based on their 190 day 2007-2008 teaching year.

Here they are in range of highest to lowest.

Teachers coming out of college with no experience

Bachelor's Degrees
Atlanta Public Schools 43,231
DeKalb County Schools 40,812
Clayton County Schools 39,809
Fulton County Schools 39,525
Marietta City Schools 39,123
Cobb County Schools 39,140
Gwinnett County Schools 38,080

Master's Degrees
Atlanta Public Schools 47,554
Marietta City Schools 45,102
Clayton County Schools 44,500
Fulton County Schools 43,560
DeKalb County Schools 43,260
Cobb County Schools 43,247
Gwinnett County Schools 42,917

So, Atlanta Public is where it's at if you want higher pay in both areas in a nutshell. In the suburbs, even though people don't want to believe it, Clayton County pays the most.

Nice info... it totally contradicts something I posted earlier based on what I heard from my teacher friends -- maybe that data was a few years old. Sorry to whoever I was replying to!

It doesn't contradict anything.... everyone knows Atlanta, Dekalb, and Clayton pay the most.... because many teachers don't want to work in those schools and deal with those kids....

I wasn't aware anyone didn't want to believe Clayton pays the most... everyone knows Clayton pays the most, it's the only way anyone would pick them over Gwinnett, Cobb, or Fulton.

Exactly, GF. It's called "combat pay."

And, just the name of the payment bonus makes you want to stay away, LOL.

Yes, I have quite a few colleagues who think Clayton doesn't pay anything...back in the day, they didn't use to, but, with what they have to deal with (like Atlanta and DeKalb), they HAVE to pay more to teach in some of those schools.

Lol that's funny....I'm sure there's a scramble for teachers to teach in the "green zone" of Clayton, since they all start out the same :P.

I am moving to the Atlanta area from WA and am trying to change careers into the teaching profession. I have a B.A. International Relations and am fluent in Spanish, but do not have a teaching certificate. According to the GATAPP website, I am a good candidate; however, I'm not too sure about the process. My ultimate goal is to teach high school ESOL or Spanish which doesn't exactly correlate with my major. Do you think it's better to enroll in a GA university for my Masters degree/certification then teach or try the GATAPP program? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions on the best approach for career changers to become certified GA teachers and/or best university programs to look into. I'm also not sure if it's too late to start the GATAPP program for the upcoming school year. Any insight would help, thanks.

My experience with Metro Atlanta is that their enrollments are down, therefore so are the jobs. I went to the job fair and made some good contacts but nothing yet

Is it true that GA high School Graduates can attend a GA public College or University free, because of lottery funding?
