Not really relevant to the Atlanta forum.

Begs the question, why did they choose Augusta and not Atlanta? You can't get any closer to a distribution hub than Atlanta.

Then it begs another question, why not Savannah?

Reading is fundamental guys:

It kept coming back to workforce and training,” Sprouse said. “I can’t say enough about the roles Augusta Technical College, Augusta State University and Paine College had in this thing”...

Clinching the Starbucks deal was $600,000 in local improvements that local officials agreed to supply, such as grading, water and sewer lines and other infrastructure improvements. The company also qualified under state law for employee training, job credits, and tax credits for using the Port of Savannah to import its supplies and to export to England its finished product.

Thinning the trees at the Augusta Corporate Park made the site more attractive, especially to a company that tries to minimize its environmental impact, Sprouse said.
From another article:

Quote:
It seems Augusta Tech sweetened the deal for a Starbucks Plant in Augusta.

Walter Sprouse with the Development Authority says the java giant toured local schools, including Augusta Tech several months ago. Augusta Tech offers the training and classes that Starbucks wants on future employees' resumes. "Very high skilled jobs. Very highly technical jobs so that means they will be employing a variety of people, coming out of high school coming and out of technical college," Sprouse said.

I'm still baffled. Augusta Technical College, Augusta State University and Paine College aren't exactly renowned. Savannah has Savannah Tech, Armstrong Atlantic, and Savannah State. Even Georgia Southern was an hour's drive.

Augusta must have put up the best incentives package.

Why do you need a RENOWNED college like Emory or Georgia Tech nearby just for a coffee manufacturing plant????

Workforce training is often part and parcel of an incentives package.

Just because a company does manufacturing and utilizes the port of Savannah doesn't always mean that Savannah is the best choice, even when considering incentives. Otherwise, practically every manufacturing facility would be on the coast.

A touch of hyperbole on my part. They seemed to be thrilled by Augusta Technical. I guess Atlanta Technical doesn't measure up? Augusta schools must know their stuff about coffee.

If Augusta pays for it, and apparently it qualifies for state support in employee training, job credits, and tax credits so it could have been Savannah.

If they do a lot of shipping, might as well be near the ship.
