Oh, thanks a bunch! I know you are kidding... but I am going to start sleeping with my face buried in a Raid-soaked pillow anyway... just in case!

We moved from NYC to Sandy Springs
Sandy Springs, GA is fantastic. I suppose there's crime everywhere but I haven't seen any here. People are very friendly and it's really pretty.

If you live near a wooded area, you may have some cockroaches, but if you put out traps/bait for them every few months, you shouldn't have a problem. I will see one, then put out a new batch of RAID thingees and then won't see another one for a few months.
As far as crime, I would be sure to research crime statistics before you decided where to live. Some areas have very little crime and some have a whole lot. In general, southside and eastside = high crime, westside = less crime, northside (north of Norcross) = little crime. In areas like Duluth, Alpharetta, Suwanee, and Cumming, there is very little crime. Also if you get farther out on the southside even, there is probably not bad crime.
It may be an overgeneralization, but the areas where most of the minorities live seem to have the highest crime rate. You can drive through an area and observe who is in cars near you and who is shopping in the stores there and get an idea as to the crime rate.
But obviously the high crime areas are closer to downtown and the distant suburbs are generally going to be lower as far as crime goes. I wouldn't live right south of the city for anything and never even drive through there. Areas on the eastside like Decatur have both good and bad areas, but mostly, I don't have a great feeling about it.
Basically anything inside of I-285 is going to be questionable, although there are certainly some good neighborhoods. But theives and thugs are lazy and they are less likely to take the time to travel far away from their homes to rob someone than just do it close by.
Again, there are probably some good crime statistics and charts/maps online somewhere for the Atlanta metro area, so I'd check into those. Certainly take some time to do some research and ask more questions here before deciding what area to move into.

Cockroaches are found everywhere except in polar regions...so I'm pretty sure they exist in California. With both cockroaches and crime, if you take a few small precautions you should be able to live without worry of them.

We even had them in Minnesota. I remember catching them in the dorms in college and making circles on the floor out of masking tape so we could race 'em. Fast little suckers. :-)

If you live in a non-wooded area...
If you live in a non-wood area you'll be bothered less by them. When we lived in a heavily wooded area in Florida, they were bothersome. Now we live on a golf course without too many trees and we rarely see them.
Make sure you get your house treated before moving in.

Oh no. Roaches? Just how large are they? I just purchased a new home in Covington and we are so looking forward to moving there. We live on an island right now and the roaches are huge. And they fly!!! Should I be concerned?

There are large dark roaches which are semi-common here called Palmetto Bugs which fly, but they mainly live outdoors.

I have been reading about palmetto bugs on this forum. Someone wrote that they are an inch think. I now feel rather unwell. I live in Bermuda. They are huge here. We just bought a new home in Covington that we will move into shortly. Would you suggest having my new home fumigated? Will this keep these bugs away? Are they around just in the warmer months?
