Default What's in Panthersville? Looks like it's right south of Decatur and south of I-20?

What is Panthersville all about? How do the heck did it get a name like that? At least, to the east of it, they have names like Wesley Chapel, which sounds nicer. When they talk about the affordable brand-new Craftsman style bungalow homes that are going in near, but not in, Decatur, where exactly are they going -- east of 285 and south of 20? Dont' know.

Well, Georgia Regional Hospital is here (a state mental facility). I worked there for a while, and although the physical plant is nice to look at, it's not a particularly nice place. Let's just say it hasn't won any awards for excellence anytime recently. I always found the neighborhood surrounding it a bit sketchy when I went to grab lunch.

It is called Panthersville because GSU has some athletic facilities there.

The Wikipedia article doesn't give the history of the name, but I am almost certain this is a historical name dating back to the 1800s preceding the GSU athletic facilities by decades if not at least a century.

Not having a good google search for a history of Panthersville, but found a site for newspaper archives, found an Atlanta Constitution article from 1882 listing someone from Panthersville, so it was around at least that long ago. The precursor to GSU wasn't even established until 1913, Georgia State College of Business Aministration gained independence in 1955, the same year that the Panther mascot was adopted.

Georgia State University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An interesting bit of GSU Trivia, the mascot was first the Owls, then Ramblers before Panthers were selected:

That's interesting to know. I used to work at GSU and recall hearing more than once that Panthersville was named after the GSU Panthers. I guess that goes to show you shouldn't believe everything you hear!!

Found a map of the area from 1855 showing Panthersville:

DeKalb County - 1855

It is one of only four communities in DeKalb, along with Lithonia, Stone Mountain and Decatur. Look at the county lines then, no Milton, but Campbell is south Fulton and Douglas, Cobb stretches over into Roswell and Johns Creek, no Clayton or Rockdale Counties....Maybe we should go back to this!
