Default Washington Post: The NEW Atlanta is making cultural waves

Today's paper

More awesome exposure of the NEW Atlanta! The Washington Post's William Powers talks about how much Atlanta has come around in the last decade. The gentrification that has transformed our city's cultural offerings, demographics, and culinary scene has caught the attention of the Northeastern elites, and they absolutely LOVE what they are finding in the NEW Atlanta!

After missing a flight, Powers had a two-day layover in the new Atlanta. During that time, he visited:

*The Georgia Aquarium
*Little Five Points (Star Community Bar)
*The Canopy Walk at the Atlanta Botanical Garden
*Ansley Park
*Piedmont Park
*And topped it off with some beers at Six Feet Under in West Midtown

He had nothing but positives to say about our fair city. His message was loud and clear: "America, come on down and visit the NEW Atlanta!!!"

That wasn't ever the reality. Ansley Park has been nice forever, Little 5 Points hasn't changed all that much (still is funky), Piedmont Park is very similar to how it has been for a long time. The GA Aquarium is relatively new and the Canopy Walk is newer. Midtown certainly has changed but never looked like Bankhead.

Actually, the city was better off in many ways during this period. Underground and the Omni complex were thriving entertainment centers up until about 1980; the Buckhead Village area enjoyed a commercial renaissance in the 80's and 90's. The city effectively killed all of the momentum in these areas eventually.

I would trade West Midtown, EAV, and the Old Fourth Ward for Buckhead Village, the Omni, and Underground Atlanta ANY day of the week!!
