Is it ok to hire a convicted sex offender? (ie. Plumber, Landscaper, etc)

I Have a question for everyone, a guy who was doing some landscape work at my neighbors came over to my house and rung the door bell, handing his card out. He did the job pretty good, but after some research on the internet about him, and his company, i later found out he was a convicted sex offender.

His prices was great, but i'm scared because we have minor children (daughrters) who may be outside when we're not both (my husban and i) are not home.

On the GBI.gov website, it says the crime happened almost 9 years ago, should i be worred?

Is this common with home service based businesses?

I would not hire him especially if you are saying that your young children will be home! I wouldn't even want him seeing my children when he was next door. Find someone else!!

You didn't say why he's a convicted sex offender, based on his particular report.

For example, in Georgia, if an 18 year old boy was dating a 15 year old girl, and her parents found out, it's entirely possible that boy can be arrested, locked up, and forever have to register as a sex offender (as the law stands now I believe). Does this mean that when he's 35, he's going to be looking to molest 8 year old children? Let's say a couple are both drinking and get into an argument after being intimate... one or the other could accuse the other of rape, and the other person could be charged with it and have to register as a sex offender. Again, does that mean that person is a danger to young girls? Doubtful.

The sex registry covers a lot of ground. If his report shows that he was charged with anything that had to do with children, then I'd not use the person in any way. But read the details of the report and make a mature decision based on that.

Regardless of sex offender status or not, I would personally not allow people to work on my home with underage children there if one of us (parents) are not on the property at the time.

Comment removed - do not insult others, please.

Let's see...
the guy is now around 26 or 27...
nine years ago he was around 17 or 18...
he probably had a 15 year old girlfriend...
whose parents couldn't stand the guy...

comment removed - what you are referring to has been deleted.

It would be really nice if these "sex offender" laws were based on common sense rather than hysteria.

Statutory rape 9 years ago, I wouldn't worry about.

However, it's personal. If it's going to worry you every time he is there and you're going to give yourself an ulcer over it, just spend the extra money and go with someone else. It'll be cheaper than your insurance deductible to get an endoscopy 2 years from now!

^^^ This!

I would consider hiring him to do my lawn if he does a good job and is reasonably priced. A 9 years ago stat rape charge for a guy in his 20s is not a deal breaker for me.

Mixed feelings about sex offenders.

I understand the concerns and there are cases where it has proved to be valid. But I don't feel we should hound a person who has paid his debt to society for the rest of his life.

You're going to timeout...

Either way, if it's a problem. Just don't hire him. It's not that big of a deal.
