No. Absolutely not. Even if you had a car I would not recommend living in Stone Mountain. There is some MARTA service to the area but not nearly enough to rely on 100%. Is your job in Stone Mountain? Not all of Stone Mountain is in DeKalb county so it doesn't have any transit service. Go to MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and see if your job has any service near it.

Really if you want to do Atlanta without a car you need to live and work ITP. It can be done but you need to be creative and make compromises.

1. Plan to live within 15-20 miles of work because traffic is a nightmare
2. Read up on the complexes you're interested in on Apartment Ratings - Apartments for Rent with Ratings and Reviews from Actual Renters
3. Call local police departments in those areas and ask for a crime report on those apartment complexes.
4. If you'd like to live in an apartment in or near the Perimeter you should look into the following areas: Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Vinings, Virginia Highlands.
5. Know that crime in Atlanta is incredibly high, particularly car break-ins and home invasions.
6. Plan to spend more money on rent if safety is a concern.
7. If renting only go for gated communities.
8. Ask if the complex has a courtesy officer.
9. Ask what happens when the gate is out of order.
10. Talk to any and everyone you meet in Atlanta (at the supermarket, at the gas station, at the mall, at the drug store) and ask them about neighborhoods.

I hope this helps
Thanks fififarrah. Can you please share which apartment did you finally choose? I'm moving from NJ to ATL with my wife in May 08 and interested in Dunwoody area. This area sure looks expensive but looking at reviews and proximity to MARTA, Perimeter Mall, safety etc, it sounds a good option.

Can anyone suggest good 1/2BR options in Sandy Springs and other safe areas nearby Buckhead (my office location). Thanks
