How many of you will stay in Georiga?
How many of you would move to Florida?
How many of you would move to Hawaii?
How many of you would move to Southern Calfornia?
How many of you would move to "fill in the blank"
.... and why?
I would move back to the Twin Cities, at least for part of the year. That's where my family lives, and where the majority of my long-term friends reside.
Well other parts of the world are prettier, more sophisitcated and have better architecture. Not being funny but I see very little culture here just a town that sold its soul to big business. Its very hard for example to find a nice house here, everything is the same only bigger. No matter how expensive the area here we still have cables thrown about the place and ugly signs, who wants that? Not me if I could afford a super expensive house and not have to work. In the UK for example you can buy stunning historic houses in country areas with lovely surroundings and great walks. If I had a 10 million dollar windfall I would want to be close to better resturants, cleaner air, nature, history, arts, decent infrastructure etc. Atlanta is ok for a worker but cannot compete with the UK, France, Italy, California and parts of the NE for someone wealthy.
Take a look at the surveys of the best in the world places to live and its always the same places for a reason. Thats why the south of France and London is full of rich Americans and other nations. Atlanta right now doesn't have the culture or amenties to attract these kind of people nor keep many people who strike it rich.
I guess on 1 million or so I would stay here and buY in Midtown or VH but with 10 million would be gone in a heartbeat.
Some of what you say is purely opinion, not fact.As I have said before, culture is all relative.Black culture is very strong here as well as Southern culture. You may not like either but thats your right.
Cables?Ugly signs?
If find a reason to hate something ,you will hate it.Things you overlook in other place will become glaring in a place you never really cared for.
Achitecture compared to California,Florida and yes Europe is much more varied in Atlanta than those places. For instance In dont typical red tile Mediterranean architecture found typically in CA and in other Western states.
Stucco everywhere!!
London is 1000 years old.I lived in London and many of my friends who live there hate the food and the weather. Many who have been to Atlanta love it and prefer it.One of them is my best friend who is English and lived in Atlanta for 10yrs .He got married to and moved back because of his wife and misses Atlanta dearly. He is now divorced and cant wait to find a jpb in Atlanta again.
Now Im not saying Atlanta competes with London.NYC,L.A. Paris etc...but it attracts a good number and keeps quite a few wealthy here.At least as a place to settle in after the jet-setting is done.
Atlanta will never be like those places mainly due to geography but it does more than well as it competes with cities on major bodies of water.
One other thing regarding culture and history.Perhaps its ignorance or whatever but I routinely has international guest. They want to see what all there is.Because I am knowledgeable,I take them all around. Not just Atlanta but all that is nearby you could do by car.Mostly just in Georgia. Here is an example of what and where ive taken some of them recently:
Cultural-and History,Nature:
MLK?Civil Rights
Gone With The Wind(one of the most sold books of all time)
Cabbagetown-One of the earliest places country music was created
Kennesaw Montain National Battlefield Monument(Civil War Battle field)
Ocmulgee National Indian Mounds in Macon.
Little White House in Warm Springs.
The Little Grand Canyon
Chief Van House in Dalonega
A College Step Show
Rafting on the Chattachoochee
Hiking up in the North Georgia
Stone Mountain
Amicola Falls
Savannah Georgia
Jimmy Carter Presidential librabry
there i salot more but th
Anyone with millions of dollars who would choose to retire in Atlanta is on drugs or has never been outside of Jawja.
For me... the Caribbean, parts of Florida (Naples, St. George Island), Hawaii (notably Kauai), parts of Central America.
Well you do know that Atlanta has one of the highest concentration of millionaires in the country?
As for me.I have travelled all over the world as well as lived in other countries.
I find Atlanta to be what I need in a BASE.Now If I had the money I would have another residence somewhere part time.
I like my life in Atlanta.I have good friends.I nice home, good weather and I can fly out on a moments notice whenever I get bored.
Not on drugs, just realistic.I dont wanna be on an Island in a country where culture is defined by what the poor people do to get by everyday. In a compund high on a hill with armed guards in case of a "coupe de at "(.Im sure I spelled that wrong)
I would keep our current house (due to sentimental value). Get a small, quaint place in either Maine or the Pacific Northwest. A flat in Manhattan (Meat Packing District/Chelsea). Finally, have a nice beach house in American Samoa.
Atlanta is a nice place to live. But lets face it, who dreams about retiring here?
Yeh but who dreams about retiring in the Pacific Northwest or MAINE?Really?LOL
Not me.I just dream about retiring!!! It can be in Islamabad if I could retire (and live) comfortably.

You brought up valid points. However, while responding to JPAtlanta's post, some of what you yourself said was opinion. Firstly, the Black culture in London is massive. On the topic of food. (I concede this is subjective) How can one hate curry houses, Nandos, or Harvester's? I do not think that many of us detest living here, but given the opportunity I would be gone. As I have said before, it is a personal choice.

Accidentally gave you a rep on this . My bad. If you really care to know my reasons, Manhattan is a hectic place and I like going to the mountains for some peace & quiet. This was my response after Mr. P put a constraint on his question. Also, good luck in Islamabad!!
If you had perused the thread, you would have seen that my first choice was:

London is a great city. Its actually the only city in Europe I have seriously considered moving too.I have lived in Frankfurt as well.I loved it there, but it was for work.
When i say black culture/History I meant it is woven throughout the history of the city itself.Blacks were not integral in its founding(although in the last 100 years or so are more prominent).
I did have many opinions but I never tried to have them validated.Personally,I hate curry but I recognize that London has eateries that specialize due to its large Indian/Pakistani populations.
Again Im not saying Atlanta competes with London for the Megarich.I do believe if more people knew where it was and knew of it and its amenities it would be much closer in terms of choices.
London has very little natural beauty.(my Opinion)).

WHAT!!!! How can one hate curry??? But, who am i to critique your opinions, when i have never had a hamburger, or beef for that matter.
Atlanta does have someinteresting very interesting places. The symphony orchestra is quite good.
Lastly, I agree abiut London. I enjoy the architecture, but except for the few large parks and small squares there is not much in terms od natural beauty. You have to travel about an hour hour away into Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Surry, or Hampshire to expirence the countryside or the coast.
