It has a rail system if you live in a couple of areas anyway.

1 line does not constitute a rail-based transit system.
This is why many people define MARTA as being the only true rail-based transit system in the Southeast. Dallas just recently joined with a large LRT system, but still can't compare to the speed and ridership of MARTA's HRT.

Funny your population gauge stops there since it wasn't long after that that the population plunged just above 1950s levels and to this day the population still is below what it was in the 1960s.

Meanwhile the counties have increased quite steadily and very rarely taken dips, and the ones that have have very smoothly recovered from that.

i chose those decades because that's when cities were still building relatively densely, before the post-WW2-suburban boom. besides, after 1950 atlanta hit the gas pedal and never looked back, growing into a much larger city/metro.

1950: (double the density and still larger!)
33 Atlanta city, GA......... 331,314 36.9 8,979
34 Birmingham city, AL...... 326,037 65.3 4,993

1960:
24 Atlanta city, GA......... 487,455 128.2 3,802
36 Birmingham city, AL...... 340,887 74.5 4,576

etc...

1950's was when Atlanta annexed large portions of what is now Buckhead and westside. That's the reason for the drop in density in 1960.
I think the population today is much closer to 1960, than the census numbers. I know since the census was taken I have moved from Birmingham to Atlanta.

Holy...

How did the density drop from 8,979 to 3,802 in just one decade? Were additional counties suddenly included in the metro area?

GIS Image/ Map Catalog Open the annexation map. It shows all years and the area annexed.

Atlanta really got a bad rap back in the 2000's when the Texas Transportation Institute were the only ones ranking traffic and Atlanta was at times ranked 2nd or 3rd after LA. They put too much weight on commute times. Atlanta had (or has) the longest average commute distance so naturally the average commute times would be longer though not necessarily due to traffic. I believe the Texas outfit is now also using GPS data, like INRIX, and Atlanta has dropped in their rankings as a result.

Ah, Buckhead. That explains it.

(BTW, that link doesn't work.)
