FYI: Fernbank has been removed from the chopping block and is not going to close.

No -- DCSS' most precious jewel needs to be the students and the people that teach them. PERIOD.

FSC has been spared for now. The DCSS can't afford to be the sole funder for this moving forward.

YEP! We took the children today. The woman behind the desk confirmed the above. My children loved it! They are seven, four, and three, btw.

That place is worth preserving, for sure. Small, definitely! I don't own any, however. Gems are small too! Donation provided prior to leaving.

Sounds like Fernbank isn't out of the woods yet. How did DeKalb school system get behind the 8-ball like this? It used to be Georgia's pride and joy.

The Fernbank Science Center, thought to be spared from the deep cutbacks in the DeKalb County School District budget, no longer appears safe from reductions in funding and layoffs.

Last month, when the school board negotiated a budget with $60 million in cutbacks, Fernbank's $4.7 million in annual expenses was spared.

On Monday, though, hours before the final vote on the budget, Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson said she would recommend $3.2 million in cutbacks at Fernbank, a school facility that operates independently of the nearby Fernbank Museum of Natural History run by a nonprofit.

Are you sure you are thinking of the science center and not the Museum of Natural History?

School systems should not be in the museum business.

The school system doesn't fund the museum does it? I thought the museum was 100% privately funded.

Museum - privately funded.

Science Center - funded by Dekalb school taxes.

At this point, in light of yesterday's news about the Dekalb schools budget, I think it's pretty safe to assume that the science center is going to close.
