Decatur sounds like the perfect fit if you have to work there.

Decatur was one of Atlanta's first suburbs and even though it is much closer to downtown than John's Creek or Alpharetta, it is still suburban in all definitions.

Decatur has many many great restaurants and bars and the DeKalb farmers market is right down the road. The ethnic shops on Buford HW are not far. I think Decatur is a great mix of interesting, closer to the city while having the safety and space of the suburbs.

Decatur was founded as a city before Atlanta ever existed, so I'm not sure that's an accurate statement.
