So, given that I spent the majority of my 20s in the D, and given that Atlanta is all the way down at #8, I'm fairly certain it will seem like Disneyland by comparison. At any rate, here's the report:

The Most Dangerous Cities in America - 24/7 Wall St.
I would like to apologize for the total lack of maturity from some of the other posters.

I am going to assume you are who you say you are. We've had some problems in the past of people trying to put down the city and bring out trolls from these types of articles. Needless to say it is a touchy issue for us.

Since you are looking into relocating, I can honestly tell you this doesn't need to be a huge issue for you at all. -Metro Atlanta- can be and often is an extremely safe community. We are a very affluent white collar international business center, but we are also a very industrial city at a major inland transportation hub. Needless to say this city has a very diverse economy that brings a very diverse population, which brings social problems and angst with it.

The one thing I want to spot out to you that might make you feel much better about that report is Atlanta (city proper) is somewhat of a statistical anomaly that has always made us look much worse in the rankings.

The issue is the city itself is a HUGE activity center for a very large metro and population (workers, entertainment), and is a huge convention/tourist hub that draws in many people. However, its borders and residential population are very low compared to other major cities it's size. All of the people who come in as tourists, daytime workers, and nighttime entertainment are also apart of the pool of crime victims... not just the residential population.

The issue is crime statistics divide the total number of crimes by the total population. If our borders were larger and had double the population, you would probably see the crime rate decrease substantially.

Now that isn't to say most other cities don't have this same problem, Atlanta just sticks out more, because of its ratio of visiting population vs. residential population. This also isn't to say everything is peachy fine and we don't have problems. We do and we have been very successful in the past couple of decades at drastically lowering our crime problem, but I'm just spotting out that common statistical measures news and websites use make us look worse than we are.

Good luck considering your relocation. As you grow more interests don't be afraid to ask about areas and tell more about why you are moving and what you are looking for. The Atlanta forum has many knowledgeable posters that can point you in the direction of many nice, safe communities that can fit your needs.
