I have a friend who has just moved to Belvedere Park in Decatur - they are on a very low budget and they found a 3-BR single-family house for rent at a very reasonable price. I went to visit and it seems quiet, if a bit run-down. The houses are all small, 1950s-era brick ranches in various stages of upkeep or disrepair. Real estate prices are exceptionally low ($30-70k).

My concern is crime - I've done searches here and on the crime websites and haven't found much info - and nothing recent.
While I was there, a sketchy-looking dude lurked in the street in front of the house for a while, but finally came to the door asking if they needed the grass cut...although the lawn is the size of a postage stamp and not overgrown. Does anyone have firsthand experience with this area?
