If it were happening today...there would be all kinds of "I hate Izzy" pages.

But Izzy could find gainful employment as a mascot for Trojan condoms. With ads like:

"Guess who's trying to make his way to your egg?"

"Use Trojan condoms...just to be sure."

I was not living in Atlanta, I was only 11, but remember seeing the 1996 Olympic Torch pass thru West Palm Beach, FL. I remember watching the Olympics on TV and the overhead shots of the downtown skyline every night.

Izzy was a flop. I saw "him" once inside the Village. They pretty much kept Izzy out of sight for the entire Olympics. I think the idea was to call him "What Iz It?" and it became "Izzy" for short. Izzy was to encompass all the sports and not be any particular one. Izzy plush toys were not in abundance. That was one of the AOC's low points.

Blaze the Phoenix was the followup Para-Olympic games mascot. Blaze should have been the Atlanta Olympics mascot as the Phoenix properly represents Atlanta. The AOC blew it with the Olympics mascot.

The announcement that Atlanta would get the Olympics came when I was a senior in high school. I remember everyone watching it on tv during homeroom. The announcement cause so much excitement that everyone ran out into the halls screaming and the school day was almost cancelled.

I didn't go to any of the sports events, but I went down to Centennial Park and saw Santana. That was a lot of fun.

A couple nights later I was at a party and we were on the front porch of my friend's apartment in Midtown. A neighbor walking by told us that the park had just been bombed.

I didn't actually go to the Olympic games, but I went to the track and field Olympic Trials here in Atlanta and saw Michael Johnson set the world record, which still hasn't been broken. I also got his autograph and Carl Lewis' autograph and took pics with a lot of my favorite track stars. I was visiting at the time, and that year I was only 17 and was trying to decide if I wanted to come to Atlanta for college. It was a great visit with my aunt and it solidified my decision to move here for school.
