No you will not have enought time to depart the airport and get back.

The food in the airport has been getting better. But Never had breakfast in the airport, but there are some mid/scale place there now.

No way. With a 6:50 landing, you wouldn't get outside the airport until close to 7:30- at that point, you'd be lucky to get back through security and to your new gate by 8:50.

I fly 100,000 miles a year. Trust me... STAY IN THE AIRPORT!!!

Realistically you don't have 2.5 hours. Flights start boarding 30 minutes ahead of time. You have 2 hours to be at the gate not 2.5.

If you leave the airport you need 30 minutes to take the train into town and 30 minutes back, plus you need to add 30 minutes buffer for waiting on a train + the time to walk around in the airport and wherever you get off. Then you need to leave time for security re-entry, at least 30 minutes if not longer. You are now at 2 hours and that is cutting is close, taking a risk, and still doesn't leave time to eat somewhere.

Leaving an airport on a layover is what you do when you have 6+ hours ....

There are pretty good food options if you are willing to pay for it though. Try some of the locally branded restaurants and not the major chains.

Airport restaurants are more expensive, but you can relax in them longer and are often more enjoyable than waiting in the concourse.

I'd recommend considering the following place:

Sweetwater Brewhouse (typical Beer and grill place, but with an Atlanta flavor)
Cafe Intermezzo (high end coffee house with decent food; concourse B)
Atlanta Bread Company
One Flew South (more expensive/upscale; concourse E)

If you want something cheap and quick... The new concourse F is suppose to have the Varsity, which is a local greasy short order place. I haven't been to the new terminal to check it out.

If price is an issue... just remember your also saving money by not paying for transportation to leave the airport. The regular fast food is only $1 or $2 more expensive than being outside the airport. A restaurant is only maybe $5 more expensive than being outside the airport.

hrmm.. I forgot the breakfast issue....

I'm not sure when the nicer places open... If all else fails Chick-fil-a Chicken Biscuits... Follow the signs to the Burger King on Concourse A.

you should probably just stay in the airportó maybe get on the ATL skytrain which goes over the interstate and back to pass some time. if you really would like to spend some time in atlanta perhaps you should schedule a layover? i guarantee you'll enjoy it, just come on here and ask us where to go.

Do not leave the area and have to go through security. You are asking for trouble. 2.5 hours isn't that long, as others have said.

If they serve breakfast, Cafe Intermezzo on Concourse B would be nice.

If you have time while in the airport there are two nice exhibits in the Plane Train tunnel - just take the moving sidewalks from Concourse T to Concourse A - some nice African Art (Stone Sculptures) and then from Concourse A to B there is a history of Atlanta Wall Mural.
