Do not live in montrose if you are looking for a family oriented community. Montrose is full of he/she freaks. I remember when I was little if we had to pass through there my parents would always cover my eyes, because they are everywhere on the streets just like nothing is wrong with that. They do have great shops and resturants in and around that area, and yes some people with money live there, but they are stupid people with money to live around all those freaks.

I would say a family oriented community in Houston would be sugarland or katy. Even sealy has really grown, but much further out.
Family oriented community in Atlanta is Cumming hands down, and Dawsonville.
I live in atlanta now and for the past 9 years, but grew up in houston.
I like atlanta better!

Family oriented community in Atlanta is Cumming and Dawsonville ? I hope you are aware that neither of these communities are in Atlanta and Dawsonville is not even in metro Atlanta.

I could have chosen Austin if you put that in the pot, but if it's Houston or Atlanta, I'd pick Atlanta. At least with our traffic issues it's greener, more corporate HQs for job options, plenty of options for education, and lots of natural beauty in the area.

Hey there, I don't know much about Houston except I've always enjoyed visiting. It is a sprawling area ... very humid in the Summer .. nice in the Winter ... HOU (Hobby Airport) is really great - better than IAH which is far on the north side if you need to leave. Houston I think has a good housing market - all sorts of variety of accomodations. Also I think they have a new light rail system? ALSO they have a beach or you can get to Corpus Christi, South Padre Island - short drive and lovely. I think there are beaches north of Houston (Galvelston?) but I don't know anything about it?
OH ... BTW, Kiplinger voted Houston #1 out of the top TEN best places in the USA to live, work and play. Here is the URL:
2008 Best Cities to Live, Work and Play
Don't think Atlanta made the first 50 or so? Not sure? Best of luck 2 U ...
Oh I also enjoy Austin as well...Great capital city and "Splash Day" at Lake Travis is a real hoot! Gotta check that out once in your lifetime (be sure to wear your bathing suit ... ) before you get old (like me)...
Cheers!

I am cultural and enjoy concerts/shows/festivals/conventions/viable social life. Houston doesn't receive nearly as many concerts/shows/major plays as Atlanta does. Atlanta's scenery is pretty as well - hills, mountains. Houston is flat land.
Houston and Atlanta are like night and day, in my opinion. Just 2 dfferent cities & it really depends what you're looking searching for. I think you already know the answer -- Go to ATLANTA! There's not much variation in terms of leisure activities here. Houston thrives from it's club scene & that's about it, in my opinion. Also, people seem to be nicer in Atlanta & that's probably because it is an attraction/tourist/celebrity city.
Good Luck!

You live in the suburbs, enough said.

Oh wow...occasionally I'm reminded that some people cannot accept others. The ignorance is just oozing from this paragraph.

I've been to Houston a couple of times and experienced Montrose. This was a few years ago...and it was ok but still kind of seedy - like a seedier Midtown from 1990.

Let's not forget that Midtown enjoyed it's own period of 'seediness' from the 1960's - 1980's; a rundown area populated by hippies, runaways, street people and rough trade.
I mentioned that when Colony Square opened in 1973 it was perceived as a major white elephant that served bankrupt its' developer. Who would relocate to Class A office space in that neighborhood?
It just goes to show you how quickly things change in this city.
