Who Wins?.......Houston vs. Atlanta
Ok. I'm planning to relocate from Memphis,TN soon. I'm in the higher education industry and will be looking for positions in student affairs. I know that both Houston and Atlanta have several colleges. However, I'm wondering which one offers the most for a 25 yr old single woman seeking job opportunities, more culture, mature (30&up) night life, but at the same time has family oriented communities?

I think there is an entire thread about this on the main US forum at the bottom of the state listings. I think Houston came out the winner from other posters. But I'm sure Atlantans will weigh in heavily here too.

Houston: Closer to the ocean. Large city that focuses more on business than tourism. Large Mexican/Spanish culture. High crime (especially post-Katrina). High humidity in the summer. Prone to large tornado outbreaks at times. Not real far from other nice cities like San Antonio, Dallas, etc., so you have a lot of day trip and weekend options.
Atlanta: Not as close to the ocean, but closer to small mountains in the North. Large city that focuses more on business than tourism. Large black culture. High crime (always high but higher post-Katrina). Hot in summers, but not quite the humidity as Houston. Prone to storms in Spring/Summer but not usually large tornado outbreaks. Close to "Quaint" towns like Chattanooga or Asheville, but not as close to other major-large/interesting cities as Houston is. Atlanta has more trees and treed areas than Houston.
Both cities are "young" cities with lots of singles. Both cities have a traffic/crime problem. Both cities have a number of college and university settings for job, with Atlanta probably having an advantage over Houston in the job market area. Both have lower than normal housing prices for cities of their size. Both cities have lots of mosquitos.
So, no one can tell you which is better for YOU. Only you can do that. Try to schedule some time in each city (2 weeks at least) and get a guide to show you around, get the feel for it, etc. Both have large advantages and large disadvantages and only you can decide what you're willing to live with (or not).

my 2 cents....
I lived in Houston for a short time and didn't like it. I think ATL has more to offer. As far as the ocean, Houston is near the gulf; not my idea of ocean.
AtL isn't that far from NC, SC beaches and Florida. I also suggest spending a week in each city; that will help you decide.

My sister lives in Midtown Houston and I just moved to North Atlanta and my opinion is Atlanta has alot more to offer then Houston. My sister will be selling and moving here. Weather and property taxes are also much better in Atlanta.

Both are nice cities...both have sprawling suburbs but the cities are working toward creating a more urban environment. I chose to live in Atlanta a few years back and I personally think Atlanta has an edge on Houston, but that's me. You would need to decide for yourself.

I've lived in both cities. Houston has great restaurants; Atlanta has "trendy" restaurants. Houston has an open attitude; Atlanta (to me) was much more closed. Houston has NO STATE INCOME TAX; Atlanta does.

On this issue I would say it's a tie.
Half a dozen one way or another.

Atlanta
Hi. I am a 31 y.o. single african-american professional woman. Single. No kids. I own a home in a Houston suburb and have lived in Houston about half of my life. I visit Atlanta regularly (was just there 2 weeks ago) and I am this close to relocating. Your interests sounds similiar to mines. I am cultural and enjoy concerts/shows/festivals/conventions/viable social life. Houston doesn't receive nearly as many concerts/shows/major plays as Atlanta does. Atlanta's scenery is pretty as well - hills, mountains. Houston is flat land.
Houston and Atlanta are like night and day, in my opinion. Just 2 dfferent cities & it really depends what you're looking searching for. I think you already know the answer -- Go to ATLANTA! There's not much variation in terms of leisure activities here. Houston thrives from it's club scene & that's about it, in my opinion. Also, people seem to be nicer in Atlanta & that's probably because it is an attraction/tourist/celebrity city.
Good Luck!
