Media conglomerate CBS Corp. will open a technology center near Perimeter Mall that will provide IT support to the Fortune 500 company’s properties. The IT and software services operation would initially create more than 100 skilled jobs. CBS is expected to announce the project June 29.

The move will add to the “Tiffany Network’s” presence in Atlanta. CBS (NYSE: CBS) owns three radio stations and has a television affiliate in Atlanta. Great news, in a recent DICE report, there is a shortage of Software Developers and Atlanta is a top 10 market right behind Dallas, with 3,070 openings.

You mean there's a shortage of software developers with the specific (and sometimes unreasonable) set of business, technical, and organizational skills and experience that employers are looking for. Oh, and that are willing to work for peanuts.

More businesses need to understand that what makes a good software engineer is not what languages one has previous experience coding in, it's their approach to development and understanding of core concepts that make up a good development effort. A good software engineer should be able to pick up the specifics of new languages quickly. I haven't had too much trouble getting opportunities at places that understand this.

Oh, I agree, and I work for such a place. The airline industry has historically been fairly good about bringing programmers up to speed through mentoring, but we have to be. The tech skillset is sometimes only a small fraction of the battle. There's a lot of other terminology and domain knowledge to wade through. :-)

You have to wonder why CBS didn't seek out a dense, walkable area for all these creative types.
