That article is so 2011. 12,000 population growth in a year is actually shockingly (and improbably) high, considering it grew by only 4,000 over the last decade.

Of course our population is growing very slowly, and not breakneck as was thought in the past. I'm surprised the article is surprised by this. (Of note, until the 1990s Atlanta lost population, and this year's growth--if it was actually 12,000--would be some of the fastest in recent memory.)

That means Atlanta (2.96%) added more people than Houston (2.18%) as a percentage of its existing population.
Not to mention the fact that Houston's land area is larger than Fulton county. All of the rest of those cities except Raleigh have land areas of at least twice the size of Atlanta. Sometimes it seems the Chronicle goes out of their way to write negative stories.

Anyway, I actually don't believe that Atlanta grew that much in one year but that the 12,000 is somewhat of a correction for what was clearly an undercount during the 2010 census.

Bottom line is midtown is mostly large tenant homes and mansions combined with gigantic skyscrapers. Theres not much in between.

Poor planning and nimbyism by the midtown neighborhood groups.

I would much rather they tear down some of those old crappy houses in midtown and build medium income apartment buildings...but we all know who will stop that from ever happening.

A lot of those homes in midtown are owned and rented out by certain types of people who live out of state. They dont even live in atlanta!
