Default Atlanta Steeplechase (Has anyone ever been?)

One of my friends at work was telling me about this event, I've never seen it mentioned here or in the AJC. Has anyone ever been? Are you able to place bets or is it just an event to view? Sorry if this has been asked before.

We used to go all the time and had a lot of fun. However, there's a good bit of standing involved and that is a little difficult sometimes.

It's one of Atlanta's great charity events.

I went years ago when it was held up in Cumming and all the Buckhead peeps went to see and get seen. There was a
horse race, but I don't remember it. Mostly it was a fashion show and high-end tailgate party. They even gave prizes to the people with the fanciest spreads. Hats, champagne, caviar. Very old money Atlanta. As the city has grown, I think it's lost much of its cache. I'm not even sure where it's held anymore, somewhere up near Rome?

I've never been to a steeplechase in GA, but at the races I've been to in other states, (formal) betting was not allowed.

Basically, this. It's held in Kingston between Cartersville and Rome off of 411. Relatively easy to get in and out. We went this year. They had 50% off Groupon infield tickets this year.

It's basically a big tailgate, you sit around 1/2 the day and there's only about 6 races, about a 45 minutes between each race. No betting. The infield is more of the cost conscious folks with the tents up on the hill being full of more show ponies. Lots of RV's as well.

I'd recommend bring a pop-tent and similar tail gate activities.

It is fun, but again, think of it as a college tailgate.
