Last night we drove about 40 miles east of ATL on I-20 and then took some backroads until we found a quiet corner. Watched about 20 meteors streak across the Milky Way in about 30 mins. You could see the lights of ATL and Augusta on the edges of the horizon still, but at least we got to see some impressive streaks of blue & yellow!

Something to keep in mind is if you can find a relatively dark area (no streetlights or houselights), its a lot easier to adjust your eyes to the starlight even with ambient city light.

I bet if more lights went out for meteor showers, Atlanta's criminal community would all of a sudden become a lot more itnterested in when celestial events were going to occur!

I agree with what was said. Atlanta is a city. Cities are bright. You want to see meteors? There were viewing parties at Brasstown Bald, Cloudland Canyon, and probably many other places.

Incidentally, I saw the meteor shower just fine from my own driveway out in good ol' Gwinnett.

I bet if you just got on 400 and shot up a few miles into Cumming or something like that you'd have a better view.

Happens every year.

And the peak night was just last night.

There's a decent chance you'll be able to see more tonight, just not as many as last night.

I read of a group that collectively own acreage somewhere in East Georgia that is in one of the least light polluted areas in the southeast, they have made somewhat of a campground of the land, many have elevated platforms for viewing the stars and park their RVs or campers underneath. I read about this several years ago in the AJC but cannot remember any more details. Anyone know what I am talking about?

Doesn't like a place that would welcome families, unfortunately, but maybe we can find someplace similar.

My google-fu is very strong, sounds like an awesome place. I'm so glad they set it up. Too few stargazing places left.
