Skeptics may roll their eyes, but plans for a billion-dollar multimodal passenger terminal downtown – connecting commuter rail, MARTA, light-rail, streetcars and buses — are proceeding. The state department of transportation has allotted $12.2 million for a master design being produced by three firms — Cleveland-based Forest City Enterprises, Cousins Properties Inc. and Integral Group, LLC of Atlanta. Officials hope it spurs enough development interest to finance it. Jim Richardson, project manager for FIC, said the terminal could cost roughly $1.2 billion.

I talked recently with two key figures on the project: John Schuyler is a principal with the New York firm FXFOWLE, which helped design new multimodal terminals being built in Denver and San Francisco. Janet Romanic, of the Atlanta firm Cooper Carry, is deputy project manager. FXFOWLE is designing the station in association with Cooper Carry, the lead architecture firm. Fluid plans estimate groundbreaking in 2014, with an opening in 2017.

Downtown terminal on track | Atlanta Forward

That's great news! I hope this will be a catalyst for downtown Atlanta as well as for additional rail transit projects.

I wonder if there is any discussion about Commuter Rail, or they are only talking buses.

Also, what effect do you think a new President would have on this project? Isn't the large majority of the funding coming from the feds? I'm sure Romney would be quick to cancel dollars allocated to the development of HSR and I thought that was one of the biggest reasons to build this.

I wish the project well.

Having a major development downtown that centers around transportation is actually honoring a lot of the city's history.

Atlanta often tries to find it's "soul," maybe the soul is transportation. From trains, to planes, to automobiles, it certainly has a rich history here.

Well it'd keep more with its history for rail. It'll finally have a grand intercity rail station, a new central heavy rail hub, and be the first to start work on high speed rail down south...and all in the same spot!

Just seems odd to build a $1.2 billion terminal to be completed in 5 years when there is no light-rail, one streetcar and even it doesn't go to it, no commuter rail, and no HSR. It doesn't even center on Five Points and that junction is not moving over to The Gulch.

You are forgetting the Mega Bus, Mathman.

If you build the terminal it is likely that trains will come there in due course. People are not going to leave a world class terminal sitting there empty.

Build $1.2 billion terminal in hopes of drawing transportation options?

Tell Pittsburgh, St Louis, and Cincinnati that. They have more than enough terminal capacity at their airports and they are sitting mostly empty.

Atlanta can feel pretty confident it can fill up its new $1.4 billion international terminal given its upward passenger trend. But HSR trains, commuter trains, streetcars, and light-rail aren't out there looking for a terminal to pull into.
