Default My first impressions of Atlanta

Relocated here from the DC metropolitan

1) WIDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE highways!
2) pretty hilly and green
3) Buckhead looks mighty impressive driving on 400S.
4) Piedmont Park area is beautiful. South Midtown, not so much
5) Perimeter is pretty nice, kind of reminds me northern virginia
6) People don't drive as fast as this forum makes it seem, DC drivers are just crazy

Just wanted to share for fun! Any tips and expectations would be greatly appreciated!

Glad you like it! I agree, the drivers aren't nearly as bad as they make em out to be.

There is tons of great stuff inside, outside, and wayyyy outside the Perimeter. If you enjoy exploring and nature you will love it here.

When you say "South Midtown", are you referring to area right b/t downtown and midtown along Peachtree St?

I definitely have to agree with you about driving in the so-called 'DMV'!! out of all the places I have driven in this country, I believe that area to be the absolute worst. I have driven around there a lot in my life too, since I used to live in central MD and Stafford , VA. No matter how many 'back ways' I attempt to take around there, there simply is no easy or even just moderately difficult way out. I very nearly get claustrophobic driving around DC, since it feels like I am trapped when trying to get out of that mess. yes the pay is good around DC, but they could pay me a million and I'd still take a few thousand rather than to have to drive down there. I mean, you work to have a life right? Well, you can't have a life having to get up and leave 4 hours before work time, and getting home near 4 hours after work ends down there. Absolutely ridiculous what people will go through just to be able to make a few more dollars an hour, wow!!

This is good to know and promising as I am moving to Atlanta in 30 days. For those familiar with DC/MD, any areas near Atlanta similar to Rockville Town Center or Kentlands or Rio/Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg?

The traffic here is interesting. The highways are so huge yet really congested. I completely see the traffic issue now

DMV drivers actually **** me off. Worst.Drivers.Ever.

Sitting in the traffic didn't bother me as much as the stupidity, which kind of reminds me, why is car insurance so expensive here? My rate went up $250 for the 6 month period O_o

Clubs (hip hop, house) & bars. Preferably somewhere where we can hop around without getting into a car to get to the next place.

Buckhead I suppose, but it does not look as walkable. Which area actually is though? That piedmont park area seemed to be the most walkable to me, anyone?

Old school or new hip hop? I'm thinking you like a mixture. I will send you a complete list of places to go later.today. you are going to be shocked and surprised if u go to the places that I recommend in a good way. The hip hop scene is way better here. You will see after about a month of living here

Really? Rockville = Athens,GA? I would say Rockville Pike is pretty similar to Cobb Parkway, the development patterns are so similar it even gets denser and you see more highrises as you go south towards both counties ends. ie North Bethesda/White Flint Mall ≈ Cumberland Mall area (if only there was rail!). Although technically North Bethesda/White Flint area is part of Montgomery County and not the City of Rockville but still share the same road name. City of Rockville would also never allow buildings as tall as in North Bethesda (300'ft) today.

As for Rockville Town Center/County government core, I can't really think of anything comparable. Perhaps a mix of the new downtown in woodstock and downtown Decatur.

The rest are a good match although I would say the equivalent to Atlantic station in the D.C. area is National Harbor in Prince George's County.

Atlanta metro and D.C. metro have very similar development and architectural patterns, their built environments are pretty close. That's why I say they reach for more Southern roots than northern ones, you wont find the architecture or development pattern so prevalent in the north east.

IDK Portions of 495 in Va (mixing bowl anyone?) and I-270 in Maryland /Montgomery are just as wide and get just as clogged and it seems like any time or day of the week.

I noticed that there is a distinct difference depending on which state/jurisdiction one comes from.

The Virginia drivers are SLOOOOOOOOWWWWWW. They are the worst imo because they will stay in the far left lane and go 40 mph or less while acting like its no problem. It's a big reason why traffic is so bad in the D.C. area, people who drive really slow not allowing people to pass, causing back ups and leaving 10 car spaces in front of them.

D.C. drivers are split in the sense that they are slow on the highways but do do a better job when they're in the city.

Maryland drivers drive much faster than the other two, they seem more concerned on getting where they are going though than making highway/road travel a sight seeing trip.
