Is this true? If not smooth jazz, what sort of music should you play?

Quote:
Please Do Not Play Smooth Jazz If You're Trying To Sell Your Home | A is for Atlanta

When it’s time to sell your house, you need to do everything in your power to create a product worth buying. There are a myriad of tasks that today’s home seller must take on, including but not limited to: staging, purging, landscaping, organizing and deep-cleaning. It’s just part of the process, especially if you’re committed to selling your home as soon as possible, for as much as possible.

You know what you should avoid doing? Turning your television on to the “Smooth Jazz” channel on Music Choice before potential buyers visit your home.

Seriously.

It’s not calming, nor is it inspiring in any way. It’s the exact opposite, actually. Do you know what it’s like to walk into a home for the first time only to be met with the sounds of John Tesh tickling the ivory? It’s distracting.

Trust me people, I’ve got your best interests at heart.

None...I want to hear exterior noise (traffic, airplane, barking dogs, roosters*, etc) as well as interior noise (floorboards, thin walls).

Any time I go to a house showing with cookies baking, music playing, too much staged furniture and so on I feel like someone is trying to distract me from actually looking at the house!

*Based on a true story...in midtown!

I noticed during the height of the condo boom, a lot of the condos used drum & bass in their waiting areas.

I'm a big electronic music fan, but I never really cared for d&b. However, for the purposes of selling, I could see its merits. The music is fast and seems hip, but you can play it at low volumes and it still sounds ok. There's also not enough going on in most d&b music to be distracting, it works really well as background music. It really helped project that hip urban vibe.

A lot of it depends on what you are going for and where your property is. If you have a place that is nice and quiet in nature, I can see using ambient music. I remember when I was younger and would go out partying, I would leave on some mood lighting and some streaming ambient music at low volume in my house. It was just something nice and calming to come home to after I had been out doing God knows what.

The drum & bass and ambient stations on Digitally Imported are appropriate for these uses.

I agree with the quote above. I would be instantly turned off by smooth jazz.

Smooth jazz is terrible.

I would prefer to hear nothing when looking at properties.

Personally, if I hear any kind of music playing and I don't see any occupants in the home, I am walking back out.

It's funny that John Tesh is used as an example of "smooth jazz". I could probably sit here and name smooth jazz artists all day long and wouldn't even remotely think of Tesh.
