And what constitutes a "top tier" student is clearly more than just grades and what high school they attended.
Absolutely.

lovelysummer...can you send me a link to that discussion. I couldn't find it.

Can I just say that I not being from Georgia, I really have no idea what state schools are considered prestigious and which are not, other than Georgia Tech. But GTech is on a national stage. It's not a regional school. I guess UGA, USC and Bama are considered prestigious. Or are they? For example, are they even on par with Vanderbilt, Duke? What are the prestigious state schools in the southeast?

GaTech is considered a very top school. But UGA etc are not considered in the same breath as Duke or Vanderbilt, which are kind of like 2nd tier Ivies. I'm not sure what are other prestigious state schools in the SE.

UNC and Virginia are the top tier Southeastern public Us, but UGA is making great strides.

Alabama not so much, but they are working hard, give tons of $ to top students and then even more money to top students majoring in engineering. Kids come from all over the country because of the $ and thrive there and are successful.

Vanderbilt and Duke are not really second tier Ivies, but are very strong private universities that have more than regional draw.

I'd say UGA Honors is easily on a par with Duke, Vanderbilt, etc. It's sort of a college within a college.

Great value for in state students.

UGA Honors has definitely developed a strong reputation...it is very hard to get into now. I think only 500 students are selected

That was an interesting thread. At Westminster, the 6th grade seems to be an expansion grade. Does anyone know how many openings they have and how many applications for those openings. Also, the 5th grade and the 7th grade also seem to have openings (about 15-20 spots for 5th grade and I'm not sure about the 7th). Does anyone have any idea about the number of applications for these spots?

Something that has always surprised me....is how most people seem to be much more interested in having their children attend Westminster, even though Pace and Lovett seem to very good schools in that area too.

I don't know an exact number, but I can say that a good number Trinity School graduates (which goes through 6th grade) enter Westminster in the seventh grade (something on the order of 15-20 kids each year, probably). Those two schools have a close relationship (Trinity grads also go to other schools, but Westminster is the #1 choice).
