There is no real Suwanee in Forsyth county, it is a post office matter. If your workplace is not too far from Mc Ginnis and (Peachtree Pkwy / Medlock Br / 141 - these are all the same road), you could tell people you work north of Johns Creek, or north of Mc Ginnis and Peachtree Pkwy, or something like that. Try google Suwanee, and you will see that it is probably 7 miles from where your work will be.

If you can't come up with a good living option, and want to live close to work for the first year - look into Johns Creek Walk (141 and Abbotts Bridge Rd). Or apartments close to 141 and State Bridge Rd.

Somewhere around Perimeter or North Druid Hills might be your best bet. Closer to things to do but not a bad commute to work either. Don't live somewhere like Midtown. Contrary to what people who live there say, there are nice bars all over metro Atlanta and I assume you will be going to work more often than going out to bars.

I think I want to stay OTP for at least the first year until I get a raise and figure out how troublesome my commute will be. Is 400 better for traffic than 85?

The north-south roads between 85 and 400 are - starting from east: Buford Hwy, Peachtree Indl, and Peachtree Pkwy. I suspect you will end up taking these, rather than 85 or 400, depending on where your work is.

If you insist on 85 or 400, here are somethings to consider:
(a) If you take 85 north, I think you will probably be traveling westwards towards 400 after that (for morning commute). That is the problem direction for the morning. My understanding is that East-West morning traffic is towards Alpharetta/Perimeter/Buckhead/Midtown (all of them are along 400 in the morning). Same logic applies for the evening. Depends on how far you have to travel from 85.

(b) 85 North is probably better than 400N, trafffic wise. In fact I think 85N outside the perimeter will be a breeze in the morning. Not sure how 400N works in the morning, but I am guessing that 400 northbound closer to Alpharetta will be crowded, then your exit off 400 in Alpharetta will initially be crowded. Again depends on how far you have to travel from 400.

Is the nightlife in Atlanta something I have to dress up for? I am more of a t-shirt and jeans guy.

You can find any sort of nightlife you desire in Atlanta, from dressing up to undressing. If you like to wear jeans and t-shirts there are plenty of that type of place to choose from.
